I am looking to put a higher powered scope on my 7.62/16" TOBR. I am currently running a Leupold Mk4 2.5-8.... I saw an add for a Steiner S3 4-20x50MM for $800, which is $200 cheaper than Optics Planet or SWFA (LaRue doesn't offer Steiner).... Does anyone have any experience with this scope?????

Here's a discussion on steiners

http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_16_5/1888_Steiner_3_12X_50mm_Riflescope_Feedback_.html

I bought a 1-4x steiner. It's steiners version of a schmidt short dot. I think they hit a home run with it. The clarity and red dot are excellent. I know that's not exactly what you're asking, however, I own several schmidts a vcog and sold a few leupolds. I would put it up against any of them and when you factor in its at a closeout price around $800 it's even better. Euro optics has a few steiner military scopes on sale for around 1k.

The one issues according to that thread (as I understand) is the steiner military series is made by steiner in Germany where some other stiners are made by  Burris  in the USA and should be avoided at all costs according to what I've read.

Hope this helps. Good luck. Keep us posted

I have read a lot of negativity regarding the new T-series scopes that they recently released.  I have also read that Steiner's CS is not all it is cracked up to be relative to dealing with the issues.  It appears that things may be getting better but only time will tell.

I had a Steiner Military model for a time and it was pretty good.  I bought it used so it was a decent price.  Tracked well and had good resolution.  Turrets were mushy compared to the top tier scopes.

I recently bit the bullet and bought a Khales k624i with the MSR reticle.  Saved a bunch of $$$ versus the S&B 5-25 which is what I thought I would buy.  Converted the savings to bullets.

It really comes down to what type of shooting you do and what features are important to you.  At the end of the day, I find that sticking with the top tier is always best.

Hope this helps.

^^^ agree. The turrets I've messed with were all mushy. My 1-4 would suck in low light but they line up well enough visually. They also don't lock which sucks too. However, it's clear, the reticle works well and it tracks well. It may work for you especially if cost is a major factor.

Eta: The bushnell hdmr is also a great option for around the same price.

I'd want more power esp at night if your shooting under a full moon or kill light for hogs/varmints.  I have a Leupold and dawn/dusk it's great and with a good full moon, but when shooting over 200yrds on small varmints I'd really like more than 20x personally speaking...

I keep wanting a Vortex but I want them to make something like the S&B UShortII with Horus but not with the 3-4k pricetag and love the Vortex warranty, they are like the LaRue of the Optics world ...

Dog ate your scope/binos, rangefinder dropped on the highway and ran over repeatedly, fire, box it up what you can find, send it in, they take care of you...

Actually the HDMR is considerably higher or I would buy one, my DMR was still $1100.00....... I need something to shoot longer ranges with on the TOBR or something to replace the DMR on my M-1A so I can put that on the TOBR. Either way, what goes on the M-1A will need to be wrapped in an LT-112 as the current DMR doesn't have enough adjustment to shoot 1K with..... 1K is my goal for the M-1A and 800 yards for the TOBR. Think I'm going to pass on the Steiner and just wait until I can afford the HDMR or at the least, another DMR....

Thanks for all the great info y'all !!!!!!
