Amex is notorious for ripping off small business owners in all sorts of ways. Ask around at a chamber of commerce meeting about them. I guarantee you will get an earful about the dishonest shit they pull.
I used to accept their cards but will never do it again. Why? A guy comes in my store and buys $800 worth of stuff and pays with an AMEX card. I swipe the card and it comes back approved. Everybody's happy til the end of the month and the bank account is $850 short. WTF!! Well it turned out that Amex wanted the $800 back and there's a clause in their merchant account agreement that let's them do that for charge backs and other reasons. The bank charged us $50 for a wire service transaction and never sent a letter, email, or smoke signal. I call AMEX to ask WTFBBQ??!!?! This nice lady on the phone tells me that that card had been cancelled.........wait for it..................................2 weeks after the guy bought the stuff from my store! Well we go round and round and she tells me that there is no way I'm going to get that money back unless I take AMEX to court. Being pissed off beyond belief I called a couple of lawyers I'd done some work for and asked them what I could do. They all told me that it wouldn't be worth my time or theirs to pursue it. I have been in business for myself for nearly 15 years and I have never experienced anything remotely like this with another credit card company. |
