I recently ordered an MRF-308. It arrived in the standard white Troy Ind. box. The rail itself was in sealed plastic bag. The instructions and assembling tool were also there. When I took apart the rail to examine the DPMS barrel nut it looked exactly like an AR barrel nut...the AR tool even fits on it. I was under the impression the DPMS barrel nut is substantially different in appearence and required some dremel work to fit correctly. Something doesn't seem right. Any input ?
The barrel nut in my MRF-308 kit is an enigma. Standard AR-15 tools will fit on it and it is even pictured in the instructions with no mention of dremel work. It is not an AR-15 barrel nut, it is too big, but doesn't look anything like the nut in previous kits or the video instructions. I'm thinking it's possible Troy redesigned the DPMS barrel nut and didn't tell anyone....hmmm ?
being that the nut needed to be dremeled on and having to use a adjustable wrench to install it is something that i felt was a weak design for a long time. I redesigned it when i designed the 308 TRX. The Barrel nut will work with both the MRF and TRX 308 rails and it now uses the common armors wrench. there is also a armalite barrel nut too that fits much better than using the OEM nut with our rails
The redesigned DPMS nut is great. I used a Troy supplied wrench from a previous 5.56 TRX rail install. With that issue resolved, however, it appears that the locking collar does not have the anti-rotation tabs as pictured in the instructions. I will contact Troy CS for this issue. In any event the rail installed prefectly once I sorted out the nut issue.
