I purchased a new (in box) CMMG-001 Phantom complete upper last month. Put it on my lower and headed to the range. Put 90 rounds of M193 through it for the first run. On the last magazine run (30-rd P-Mag), the second shot failed to extract. Not a big deal though, I know it's new. I finished off the mag and headed back home to clean it and re-lube.
Yesterday, I headed back to the range with 200 rounds of M193 ammo and did not make it very far. After 20 rounds through the first mag, it jammed. Dropped the mag, cleared it, and started over. Same thing happened. Took the bolt carrier group apart, cleaned everything, and tried again. Now it won't even chamber a round properly on the first try. FInally got it to chamber after a few attempts and it started jamming again (not extracting). I'm still fairly new to the AR rifle, but I examined everything to my best ability and found the gas key to be loose and it has some play in it. It is 'staked' but does not appear to be consistent. It looks like two sides are staked a little harder than the other two. So obviously the screws backed out some ? I am sure the loose gas key is the reason for failed cycling right? I don't have any pics right now, but I can get some up this evening. I also noticed the M4 feed ramps have some excessive looking wear for only 100 rounds. Is this normal? It's not gouged from what I can tell, but definitely has some discoloration. Also, the dust cover does not close properly. The notch is not bored out enough for the spring-loaded ball to close on it's own. I have to use a tooth-pick to push the ball down to properly shut the dust cover. So far, not very happy with this upper. I plan to call CMMG tomorrow to discuss the issues. Can anyone shed some light on this in the meantime? Here is the particular upper: CMMG001-PHANTOM •Barrel: 14.5" Mil-spec 4150 chrome-moly vanadium steel M4 contour •Chamber: 5.56x45 NATO, Hard chrome lined •Twist: 1/7 •Upper: Forged A3 with extended feed ramp cuts (M4 ramps) •Front Sight: F marked forged •Flash hider: YHM Phantom (YHM28-A) •Bolt & Carrier Group: Semi-auto Thanks! |
| I was going to say, most AR companies will freely work on their own rifles if they are malfunctioning. I have been pretty happy with all of the CMMG rifles and parts I've had. One of the recent toys I've been playing with is my roommate's new upper, .300 Blk. My first rifle was a CMMG, I believe I'v had 1 jam in the 7 months I've had it. 1 jam out of 2500 rounds…I'm okay with that, better than some of the AK's I've had. |

UPDATE: Spoke with CMMG about the issues and they are sending me a pre-paid shipping label to get the upper back to them. Josh was helpful and easy to deal with. Will update again when I receive the upper back. Thanks CMMG. CMMG is #1 at Customer Care.. Dave S |
| The good folks at CMMG will take care of it. I have a similar rifle to yours, mine is the 14.5" model but with the lightweight barrel. Of my dozen or so AR's its my favorite 5.56mm due to the nice balance and light weight. Its totally trouble free so there must be some little something on yours that shouldn't be hard for them to spot and fix. Their rifles are first class so no worries. They will have it back to you in no time all well again. |

CMMG has had their share of issues to work through just like any other company. I found enough positive and quality in their products though to make me feel comfortable purchasing. As of now, I would buy CMMG again. Just a loose gas key that appears to be causing FTF. |
| I have a CMMG products in .22, 5.56, 300 BLK, and 9mm. They all work great and give me zero issues. When I wore out a part on my .22 conversion they just popped a new piece in the mail and sent it right out. I like that I can call them and get to talk to a real person who is helpful and speaks English. I have full confidence in anything they make and sell. Any item produced can have a problem, so its how well the company deals with the problem that matters. CMMG takes good care of people, they earn your business. |
