Black and Blue Insert. Different material, or just the color difference?

They are diffrent materials. The black one is designed for the carbine. It is a little stiffer. Current issue M4 carbines come with the black insert and the gold color extractor spring (stronger).

The one with the blue insert if for older weapons, both rifle and carbine.

The one with the black insert is for more modern variants, both rifle and carbine.

There should be a third option for the heavy gold spring with black insert for post 2003 carbines.
