I just purchased a used Colt Match Target Competition HBAR, Model MT6700 from a gunshow dealer. The S/N is CCH006XXX. I have several questions about the rifle I haven't been able to answer by looking through the site: 1. Why is the receiver marked .223 and the barrel marked 5.56 NATO? 2. Is the chamber and/or barrel chrome lined? 3. What does the CMP marking on the barrel signify? 4. The twist rate (at least I assume it is the twist) marked on the barrel is 1/9. Are lighter or heavier rounds more accurate with that rate of twist, or is it about the same? 5. What is the ball-park age of this rifle? The dealer still had the original box and the rifle looked to be in almost un-fired condition. I was able to get him down to $700 cash, so I am fairly happy regardless of the rifle's age! Thanks in advance for any help! |

I'll try to answer as many as I can: #1 - I heard this urban legend that 5.56 was frowned upon by society so Colt put .223 on the civilian lowers to fall in line with "the man". They did not change the barrel since when they are stamped they have no way of knowing if it will end up with the military or us. #2 - The chamber is chromed but not the barrel. #3 - Colt Manufacturing Product or something like that. #4 - Check out Troy's Ammo FAQ over on the ammo board. #5 - It's no older than 1998 that's for sure. More than likely it was made in the past year or two. Hope this helps - Marc |
