I'm out of town but in my home state and just happned across a small gunshop and figured some gun porn wouldn't hurt.

While inside I found a very clean Colt SP1 on display for a very reasonable price.  I was itching to buy it but decided to wait and check up on it a bit.  The major question I had was when it might have been made.  I checked Biggerhammer.net's Colt serial number list and I want to be sure I am reading the list right.  The serial No. on this SP1 was SP156XXX.

So I'm guessing this is an early 1980s gun.  Correct me if I'm wrong but that is what it appears to be based off of this serial number list.  Rifle is for sure a SP1 with slab side lower, upper receiver without FA or shell deflector, and A1 flash hider.

Any input would be appreciated.

I would say 1970?
The early 80's had the FA and I think the deflector too?

Based on my purchases at the time 1982 +/- a year. Typically in that time frame factory color mismatches between upper and lower receivers were common

Don_Francis:

The picture you posted pretty much represents what I saw yesterday.  The rifle's colors do match and it is in great shape.  Probably was a safe queen traded in on something else or on consignment.  The price is awfully low for it and the dealer admitted that he really wasn't sure what to charge for it.

I might have to pick it up just to have the classic SP1 configuration.

Another question I have is regarding the front pivot pin.  Obviously its the Colt large hole pin.  Are two flathead screw drivers required to disassemble it?

If the colors match I would lean toward 1982-83 as Colt show some improvement then.
Yes you need two screwdrivers for this pin, aftermarket push pins are available.

Thanks for the info.  I have several new ARs but never owned a SP1 but somehow this retro look is really  starting to suck me in.  The price is $800.00 so I might have to take the dive for it.

Where would one find aftermarket adapter pins.  I'm sure I've come across them but ignored them in the past.  Would a place like brownells have them?

Thanks for the infor again Don_Francis.  I knew I saw them at Bushmaster.  I also found some at Brownells.

I'll have to post pictures when I decide to pick this one up.

I have an SP1 with a serial number fairly close to that one.

It was made in 82.  I purchased it new in 83.

slab side lower.  no FA or brass deflector.
