Saw an SP1 today ser.# in the 17000 range. No buttstock storage, Stock was shiny, its been 36 yrs. since I had an M16 in my hands. I do remember no storage and I think they used to paint the furniture, any knowlege? could this SP1 have an M16 stock. That serial# is from the early 70s I think. Any info would be appreciated as I may buy this.

The stock sounds correct for a 1971 rifle. This is the period when M-16 and M-16A1 parts are found mixed on SP1’s. The very early stocks, M-16, not
SP1, were paint. Photo’s here of early SP1’s.

Ah yes, I love that classic two tone color look. Does anyone out there make A2 stocks with the gloss black color? I don't want to paint one myself since it probably wouldn't look good

I mis spoke on the serial# It is 194xx. Colt says 1972, it is shiny! Also it has A1 birdcage not pronged. It does not look as if it has been messed with in fact there isnt a mark anywhere except where the door hits and that is slight. I think I got lucky! Thanks again for the info and the pictures, they look good, are they yours?
