I'm new to the black rifles. I bought a professional ordinance about 1 1/2 years ago, and haven't been happy with it since. Just recently, I lucked up and found a preban Colt at a steal (knowing very little, even I knew it was a good buy!). h It has a birdcage flash hider ... I think. Is the barrel threaded so I can remove the hider? I really don't know what I'm looking at... Also, there is no fence around the mag release. I thought that "problem" had been "fixed" at a much earlier date. The right side of the receiver is smooth. What's up with that? The rifle has an A2 upper, 20" barrel, no bayo lug, 1/7 twist. According to a Colt commercial variants list on Biggerhammer, I think this rifle is a R6551. Could I be I right/wrong? Any help/info would be greatly appreciated! By the way, this site is awesome! I wished I had known about it a long time ago. Maybe then I wouldn't be so completely lost when it comes to these black beauties... |

What you have is a "blue label" gun. It is a pre-ban rifle that had the bayo lug nuetered so's not to offend the anti's. Didn't work. That is an A2 birdcage flash suppressor on the muzzle. It will screw right off, though it may be torqued on there pretty good right now. The Sporter Target model had the govt type barrel profile, ie., light under the handguards, heavy under the front sight and forward. I do believe R6651 is the right model number. You probably have an earlier production blue label rifle, that is why it still has the slab side lower receiver. I bought a R6601 Sporter Match HBAR (the full heavy barrel) new in June of '90'. It, too, has the slab side lower. It also has a "SP" series serial number. Colt did some really different things during this time frame. And welcome to the board. |

Thanks for the info Jonnie. Now, if I use a bigger pipe wrench, I can probably get this hider to unscrew...hinking.gif |

When I said my blue label Sporter Match HBAR had a "SP" serial number and then Colt did weird things in this time period, check this out. The serial number on my rifle is "SP249xxx." This is several numbers lower than dobk's 6420 in his thread: www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=2&f=29&t=138252 |
| It's perfectly legal for your rifle to have a real flash suppressor, so why put a fake one on it? Unless you mean a fake sound suppressor. Then yes you can unscrew the f/s and screw on the fake sound suppressor. BTW, it's standard right-hand threads. Righty-tighty...lefty-loosey. |
|
Yeah, a sound suppressor is what I meant, sorry for not specifying. Thanks for the confirmation on the r/h threads, a buddy of mine told me he once spent half a day trying to get a f/h off one of his other guns(don't remember what it was) to realize the threads were l/h. Turned it the other way and it popped right off... On a side note, I once had a friend in college, a journalism major (verrrry intelligent and outgoing) ..... (sexy too!) that still had to make L's with her thumb and forefinger when she was driving to help her remember which way was left and which way was right! Never could understand that. |

Stokes, My rifle has (horse)(Colt) SPORTER TARGET MODEL CAL.223 SER.GS0099XX on the side, and is smooth on the other. Explain to me exactly what I should be looking for when talking about the sear block. Is it the 'thickened' metal in the rear of the receiver? If so, I wouldn't know if it came from the factory like that because it's not there now. I don't know who removed it, but it was like that when I bought it a month ago. |
| The DIAS block would be located in the rear area of your lower. A steel piece with pin(s) comming in from the right side as retainers. If you have a "GS" serial number I doubt it has the block. A DIAS block would be located straight above the selector / safety lever. |

Yep, just confirmed it, no sear block. Thanks guys for all the info you've contributed so far (if you've got more, keep it comin') and all the questions you've answered. I'm sure I'll have some more soon, because I just ordered a stripped lower from RRA and I want to get a rifle put together soon. A friend is helping, so maybe I won't run into too many problems. I'll let you know how it turns out... |
