I received a 10-pack of Brownell's USGI, green follower, 30rd. magazines last week. I noticed then that the follower movement in a few of them was somewhat sluggish. None of them hung up, but they definitely didn't move as freely as they should. I replaced the green followers with yellow Magpul followers. Again with the same magazine bodies, the follower movement was sluggish. It was actually a bit worse, given how snugly the Magpul followers fit. A couple of them would hang up about 1/4 to 1/3 of the way down from the top.
These particular magazines have the grey, chalky-type finish that seems to mark up easily. I don't know that rough is the right word to describe it, but it's no where near as smooth as the Teflon finish magazines. I'm thinking the increased friction from the finish is to blame. I suppose those magazine bodies might also be a the smaller end of tolerances. At any rate, I coated the interior of all of the magazine bodies with some spray silicone. Once it dried, I reassemble the magazines and there was a very noticeable improvement in follower travel; especially in the problem mags. All of them moved smoothly and didn't seem to stick at all. Has anyone else noticed anything like this in their Brownell's magazines, am I correct in thinking this issue will be self-correcting as they wear-in with use? |
