Here's the situation.

Before Christmas I did some barrel swapping, i put my Colt M4A1 barrel on a CMT upper with my LT 7.0, then sent it to Adco to have the FH pin/welded.

The CMT upper is really starting to annoy me, since i was in a rush, i didn't check it to see that the damn thing is so tight it requires an act of god to close the rifle and push the takedown pin in.

I've been on the prowl for a Colt M4 upper (to go with the Colt barrel).

here's my dilemma:
the FH is permanently attached, however the barrel has the LT barrel nut and rail nut installed, so really i don't think i need to remove the FH or FSB completely.

it looks like i can knock out the FSB pins, scoot the FSB forward, and then push the rail forward enough that i can get in there with my barrel wrench and pull it off the upper.

has anyone done this before?

i've already removed the pinned FH once to install the LT7.0 and i really don't feel like doing it again, paying for a new phantom, the pin/weld job, and risk damaging the barrel.

You'll need to remove the gas tube/ pull it forward with the FSB as well, but yes, that's exactly what you need to do to swap uppers out.  LaRue makes a really nice upper reciever themselves you know...it will be in spec without a doubt.

i've found it easier to just pull the whole FSB assembly with gas tube attached, it minimizes my chances of losing that damn little roll pin...

the larue stealth would go nicely on a precision rifle, but this is a carbine, and i want M4 cuts to match the barrel...
