How reliable are these uppers? Can they be used hard or are they more of a range toy?

They are every bit as reliable as anything else.
They use a standard bolt carrier assembly.
ETA: it wouldn't be my first choice as a combat rifle because I was trained on a standard type CH, and I like to have some place to rest the tip of my nose.
