Well this post is a thank you, because Magpul is awesome, and because I am feeling rather joyous during this holiday season. It might not seem like it at first, but read the whole thing.
First off, I am new to carbines, and am currently underway building my first of many ar15's. While looking for parts the other day at the local gun show, I was talking with a dealer. I explained what I had already and what I was planning on doing in the future. When I told him I had multiple Magpul parts on my rifle, he looked at me like I was an idiot and to quote him "just another fanboy". He didn't carry any magpul stuff, and when told that I was not a "fanboy" he scoffed at me and told me to look for my part (midlength handguards) at a booth a bit farther down the line. I left, but it got me thinking. To me, as well as others, being a "fanboy" is one who thinks that a company is great no matter what they do, and for retailers, no matter the prices. We all know them, but we also know that people can have biases, and that's just a simple fact. There are also facts as to whether or not a piece of equipment is good, and if it works for you. And though I choose to put multiple pieces of equipment from Magpul on my rifle, I certainly don't think this makes me a "fanboy"... and here is why. Magpul makes quality products that work for me. Maybe they don't work for other people and their preferences, but they work for me. They are high quality and high value items, from a company that stands by their product and wont release things just because people want them, they wait until the product lives up to their standards and is ready for the open market (Drake....). Magpul also has made the "art of___" and "dynamic___" series of videos designed to give the community views and information from their tactical courses. The truth is that not all of us can afford to go tho these courses, and so it is nice to be able to get that information out to the community and further the capabilities of shooters. A specific example of this would be the dynamic handgun videos. I am a new shooter as stated, and usually went pistol shooting about once a year. I know practice makes perfect, and I will always continue to practice until I can ... to quote Travis... "reach higher on the ladder of excellence"... I was able to however shoot at a range early in June, before watching the Magpul videos. My groups were terrible. Slow fire, 7 yards, and i was all over the paper. (I wish i had saved the targets, but i didn't). I then watched the Magpul videos, and went back to the range in August. All i have to say is WOW. I shrunk my groups (3 mags) down to a 5 inch oval with faster fire and at a longer distance (with a glock 17 and a SW MP9 both). I personally was able to see the difference in my shooting abilities, and was able to then critique and help my dad with some of the things I had learned through the dvd's. It was truly amazing. So thinking back on this, I say screw the haters. Magpul puts out quality information and products that work for me. People can hate on Magpul, Larue, DD, CMMG, DPMS, etc etc. But when it comes down to it, if their products work for you, then go for it. You can call me a fanboy all you want, but I know that Magpul does and will continue to make great products, and I have no problems what so ever putting them on my rifle. So thanks Magpul team, and have a great holiday season. |
Fanboy
Yeah I agree about Magpul & there stuff. I'm in the process of making my RRA franken AR into MY AR. I want it to fit me & thats the cool thing about the AR's modular platform is you can make it fit you for the task you give it. My current AR has the CTR stock cause I like the longer/taller shoulder portion so I can shoulder the stock high. I also went to the CTR because the stock 4 position stock was to short in the rear, wobbled, & locked into a position that was either to long or too short. Like Goldilocks the CTR is just right. I went with the MIAD grip so I could figure out if I liked a longer reach-I do. I'm trying the AFG but on a carbine length hand guard its not right for ME. However on a rifle length hand guard its pretty dam close to just right. So I guess that gunshow dealer would call me a fanboy too. 7mm |

been wanting to type something like this for awhile, beat me too it =P
But I completely agree, before i saw the DVDs I was a terrible shooter, but once i wateched them over and over and dry practiced all day, my skill dramatically increased. Granted there is still much to be gained by actual live fire practice, I guarantee that close study of the instruction of these videos will give a sharp edge to anyone who just has an AR/PISTOL/SHOTGUN just for the sake of having it. So once again, thank you Drake, Travis, Chris, Richard and all the Magpul Staff. |

You're fine - except that it's Merry Christmas dag nabbit I'm not incredibly vocal about many things dealing with material goods. But I do let my wallet do the talking. My rifles both wear magpul stocks, grips, and forearms - for very good reason. It's very good gear, and it doesn't make me broke (though that is secondary - I can save money longer for more gear). But man I would love if ya'll would release some 5.45 AR mags
