Hello

I bought a Colt AR15 Sporter back in 1974 before I went into the service. The AR15 has 5 digit serial number and an "X" stamped after it. I was told this reciever was marked for Military and Law Enforcement? Does anybody know why I have a reciever stamped with an "X" after the 5 digit serial number? I need an expert and AR15.COM must be the place to go.

Thank You all for your help!!!!!!!!!

I was trying to sell my gun, but somebody told me the reciever was very rare and not to sell it? Could this be true? Does anybody else have one?

Should find out before I give it away!!!!

Thanks Again!!!!!!

It may have been a duplicate serial number and to make it different they added the "x"  This has been done by other manufacturers.

At one time Colt would stamp an X after the serial number after they worked on it at the factory. I don't know if they ever did this with AR15's.

I also have an SP-1 with the "X" at the end of the serial number. I asked Colt about this several years ago and they stated it was added to indicate a factory rework job. I'm not so sure, because plenty of folk I know have had factory rework done and theirs did not return with an "X" marking. I don't think the answer is 100% conclusive. IMO
