I'm looking for an "all around" type of scope that can handle hunting and punching paper, as well as some light training for possible future as a police "marksman."  I was looking for something in the 6-10x fixed power. I have a leupold 3x9x40(I think)vari-XII now and was thinking of either leaving it on one of the higher ranges, or thinking of the tasco ss10x40 or the bushnell elite 3200 10x "tatical." With money being an issue, the most I could spend is for the tasco.

Also what bases/rings do you recommend for a savage 10fp .308, as this is what the scope would be mostly for. Eventually it might serve double duty w/ either a 20 or 24" upper for my ar-15.

nismofun,

You know what would be perfect?  A Leupold 3.5-10x40 Tactical, but since the money is an issue you could go with the new VXII Leupold 3-9x40 Mil-Dot for $389.95.  It has target knobs, mil-dot reticle (that you will need to get accustomed to) and multi-coatings.

The SS is also a good idea, it would be better for police training as it is a fixed power with exposed target knobs and a mil-dot.  It is more of just a tactical scope, where the Leupold is more of a hunting/tactical scope with its variable magnification.  I would not consider the Elite 10x right now as we have been getting a pretty high rate of returns on them with the complaint being that they will not hold zero.

I would go with standard Leupold rings and bases on your 10fp.  Their system has been around for over 75 years unchanged, so its pretty sturdy.  Just don't put cheap aluminum "Weaver style" mounts on it.  One piece of the puzzle you don't want to skimp on is the mounts.

nismofun,

Sounds like you already have a great all around scope. I have to agree with SWFA, go with the Leupold base and rings. You can't go wrong with Leupold or SWFA.
