That's what I do. I believe most put it on the second most rear slot. That is what most manufacturers put them on completed rifles.

You want to maximize your sight distance, so you place them as far apart as possible. That means as far forward on the front as possible, and as far rear on the rear as possible.

I put the rear as far back so the top of the sight is just about at the rear edge of the rail/receiver. Think it is the second slot, but not 100%. I want the longest sight radius as possible on a 16" carbine upper.

The front was tricky for me. My 5.56mm upper is a Spikes M4 with Adams Arms piston kit. I run a MOE forend, with IWC Mount-N-Slot on the left side (holding a Surefire 6PX Pro). In the forward slot, I could not mount the MBUS Pro on the gas block. Even installing it prior to the light/forend being installed did not work. So, I pushed the light mount back to the center slot, and it gave enough clearance to mount the sight (ends up between the filter and the light handle; originally, the mount itself was causing the issue). Same light output, and a little different position for the button, but not a bad move. The MBUS Pro is as far forward as I could, and still gives easy access for removing/adjusting the piston.

At least now I have sights on the rifle. Very happy with how compact they are, especially compared to the polymer MBUS. Solid back up iron sight. When I get some more money, I'll toss on an EOTech EXPS2 and G33 magnifier.
