We use an action block for most barrel work, and a upper vice block for tinkering.

Lugs are usually broken off by using a "Claw" (Upper Vice Block) for barrel work, because it holds the upper using pins through the lugs. Action block is much better for barrel work.

ohhh ok, i always called that an upper receiver block too, just a clamp style instead of claw...so the only thing else i knew of was the barrel one

thanks!

is The Claw. Works great for tinkering, not ideal for barrel work.  Upper Vice Block is like that, but without the part that goes into the upper receiver. Never want to use one for barrel work.

The Claw works ok for installing a barrel, to 35 or 40 ft/lbs, but more than that, or removing a barrel, where torque required to remove is unknown, use an Action Block (clamp).
