SCWolverine, how big is that panel going to be?
I've got a 12" x 12" sheet of .06" thick aluminum, a CNC router (made from 80/20  ), and I've been wanting to try cutting some larger aluminum pieces... may as well try to make a useful product.
So if you are interested, send me a drawing with measurements and I can cut it, send you a picture of it... and if you decide you want it, just cover the shipping. |

I bought two of these yesterday
link one for + one for - it was what I could find locally. Thing is, I'm not so sure it's the best option, so before I begin....I'm gonna look around some more. I would think there would be an option that would allow you to feed the entire block through and not have to jumper from one to the next? ideas? |

I had not, thanks! good idea and would work-and well.....also gotta think of fusing, considering going the way of a fuse/distribution panel since I sent my breakers to CO  ?

If you don't need it fused for over 15 amps, GMT panels are nice and small. I can't remember if they make them for 12 volt or not... I know they are 24/48.
We always called them grasshopper fuses:

We always called them grasshopper fuses: http://thumbs2.ebaystatic.com/m/mn95a9chYG8VJVZ4ztSZXAQ/140.jpg even coming from a telcom background, i would not suggest using these type of fuses. the entire raison d'être for the grasshopper fuse is indication and/or alarming of a blown fuse –– such information valuable info in a CO (or RT or CEV) environment as it helps remotely isolate the source of the problem (rectifier/battery plant, BDFB, power cabling, equipment, etc.). the way the grasshopper fuse works is that once the fuse blows, the spring contact segment held in place by the fusible link pops up, and not only presses up against a third contact in the fuseholder (closing an alarm circuit), but also visually shows at the front of the fusepanel that the fuse is blown. nevertheless –– while these are good qualities –– outside of the telecom environment grasshopper form factor fuses are nearly impossible to find. even within telecom circles most modern equipment is designed with breakers. for this reason, i suggest that folks employing overcurrent protection in EMCOMM boxes and similar use either magentic/thermal circuit breakers, or use ATO-style (bladed) automotive fuses. the latter are available at auto parts stores everywhere (even Walmart), and in a pinch can be "stolen" from some other unneeded circuit in a car. ar-jedi |

I think you would be better off with a distribution block as used for powering multiple amps in car audio. One power in, multiple power outs. For those that are looking to use the ATC style automotive fuse block, you can get 20 and 30 amp self resetting breakers that pop right in. That is what I used in mine, and also like the fact that I can utilize common fuses as a backup. I do like the clean look and the wiring with the marine style breakers, but decided that I wanted to be different, I used enough inspiration from ar-jedi and BD.

Because of the massive power outages, damage and fatalities they had Skywarn, and ARES nets running, and many people were not making it into the repeaters, or would disappear as power was lost. We had winds in excess of 60 mph and possibly 2 tornadoes. We have 152,000 without power in the area. The net running now most are running generators but many are not on the air since they do not have batteries. As the storm rolled in the lightning was really kicking, so I unhooked the AC and kicked in the backup battery and was operating on backups throughout the storm. It really is great to have this box, and being able to switch in a second. Thank you everyone for the inspirations and support/advice on the builds. Round 2 will be here in just a bit and it looks worse. |

I like the BlueSea products, but I have found an all in one place to get anything almost that you need. www.waytekwire.com Download their catalog and order a hard copy for later reading material. They do have a $35 minimum order or they add on $5. The fuseblock you ordered is a generic one that almost all marine and automotive electrical places carry. And you can link them together for 4, 8, 12, 16, ect gang fuse blocks. |

ETA: More on the storms affects- There were a lot of people that would only break squelch on the repeater, and never make it above the noise floor. Most because they were on the HT's and most checking into the nets were mobile because of the power outages. I was relaying info for people without power and checking in on nets to give them updates on round 2. I did have a problem hitting one repeater with the jpole, downfall of an antenna inside and only 10 watts. Just one more reason to add a dedicated 2 meter rig. So now I have to get a smaller tuner and start rearranging the box a bit. |
