I'm looking for an LED lantern that I can power from my battery box I'm building.  Ideally I do NOT want it to have its own internal/built in rechargeable battery.  Balance of efficient and bright.  Thanks

build your own. you will need to know some basic electronics but it isnt hard. it would be easier to get a pigtail for an automotive application and buy a 12v led bulb to fit. something like a 3157 with matching plug would get the job done.

Have you considered using a 12 volt LED trouble light instead? They make several varieties that plug into a cigar lighter.

Combine it with one of these for adjustable brightness.

Basic 12 volt LED work light without rechargable battery:

Some 12 volt LED  "bulbs" here will work in some DIY or auto droplight applications:

Hard to find 12 volt lanterns that don't have a rechargable battery too.

These work good, but are not a lantern.  Here
Have a pair of these in the storm shelter, and IIRC draw about 0.5amp each.  BRIGHT too!
