12v refrigerators/freezers (Page 2 of 2)

Just back from a road trip to Yellowstone with the Engel unit, it was flawless. at lowest setting it kept food cold and ran fine on car accessory (cig lighter) power in back of our new jeep. Did not run overnight as we had a room with a mini fridge. In contrast, the BougeRV unit that I ordered, cancelled after weeks of waiting, that was mistakenly delivered way late, that I sold new to a buddy, sounds like it is voltage finicky. Works in his F150 while running, but errors out if not running. Does the same on his houseboat, will not run on starting motor battery unless engine is running, he is making provisions to run on house / solar package. Voltage too low if alternator not spinning. This is why I wanted the Engel, but initially did not order initially due to cost. The Engel is as low tech as such a device can be and much more likely to survive long term use (at least in my opinion). |

| While too big for an overlanding rig, I use a Norcold 12V fridge at my solar off grid cabin. These are commonly used in RV’s, and are about a 2/3 size standard upright fridge and they have a separate freezer compartment. They use a brushless compressor pump and only need about 80 watts to run-my 900watt panels and 600AH batteries don’t even notice it hooked up. Not the fastest thing to get down to temperature, but it holds it well and gets as cold as you could ever want to. |

I use a Dometic CFX3 75DZ or CFX3 55 depending on the trip. I mounted a SAMOUT cooler slide in the bed of my truck along with a battery mount that I keep a Ecoflow Delta MAX 2 in. I plug the cooler into the battery and the battery into the bed outlet in my truck. I have a separate solar panels for the battery, but I'm working on some sort of solar panel that I can semi permanently attach to the bed cover.
