It's that time of year again for the Ohio Soybean Conservation Effort to begin anew.

First trip out yielded 2 in an old honey hole:

Both were shot @ 165 yards from back across the river.

Indeed, I'm very fortunate to have the access that I do on private property.

Two more tonight in a field that's always been loaded.

First one was @ 241 yards:

Second one of the evening popped out of the weed line @ 100 yards even and yielded a blueberry.

Still working the same field, wind was up a bit tonight and I whiffed a few times:

First one was a chip shot @ 78 yards:

Next one met its demise as it wandered out into the field @ 143 yards

I gut shot one @ 296 and it made it back into the weed line not to be found, my first runner of the year.

Still working the same field but only saw one tonight.

He caught a 55 grain Hornady V-max at 133 yards:

Thank you.

We try not to let them go too big around these parts but a few succeed.

30 lbs is as big as I estimate they get at the top end.

I managed two tonight still working the same field, both were at 160 yards:

I don't think that would be the problem. My problem is that I think I'm about 600 miles south of the nearest ground hog.

Nikon M223 20MOA mount.

http://swfa.com/Nikon-M223-XR-1-Mount-P61435.aspx

I wasn't very impressed mounting everything up due to both sides of the rail clamp loosening up but it's held my scope without any problems for a couple of years now.

Both sides of the clamp come off the mount:

It's not a bad mount for the money.

Thanks for the info. on the mount......is 10X enough magnification for groundhogs @ 200yds. or less?

That depends on the shooter, honestly.

I like more magnification but you may be fine with 10X.

If you had to choose between a 10X, 12X, or 16X, which would you go with?   My previous experience is limited to a 10/22 w/3x9, and shots/hits no farther than 85-90yds.

I'd go with the 12X.

After giving it some more thought and having a bit more time to reply....

A variable scope gives the shooter better ability to dial in different magnifications for different conditions. You'll see different light conditions, different backgrounds and groundhogs like to hang out at the edge of the weed lines to check things out before they eat.

Higher magnifications help to pick them out of the background and dial in on a head that may be the only thing stick out of the weeds.

OTOH,you will also probably see closer shots that occur under 50 yards and higher magnification makes those shots harder, IMO, so it's nice to have a variable to cover the possibility of conditions you may encounter.

I could get by with a fixed scope but a variable will enhance your chances of hitting the target under more conditions.

You live in KY, why can't you do it? Go for a drive in the country and talk to some farmers. I'm sure a few would let you kill some vermin for them.

I live in the Columbus area and hunted groundhogs for years, when I first started they were thick in the areas that I hunted, the last few years those numbers have went down(I think that's mainly due to hunting pressure/coyotes) I see more within the city limits than I do out in the country, My favorite rig the last few years was always a Remington 700VS in 223 with a 6X18 Leupold shooting a 40gr V-Max.

I live on the main eastern end. I would have to drive  4 hours to get to a place with no mountains.   thats a long drive for a couple hour of evening hunting

A few years ago I hunted with a 220 swift loaded with 60gr Sierra HPs, it wasnt a really fast load but it was notorious for the splat factor.
