OK, first off, I know there are firearms related forums on this site.

However, I also see lots of posts about .22s for survival in this forum and specifically a lot of posts about Ruger .22s. SO, I figured someone here may be able to answer this question for me in this forum.

Can the bolt of a Ruger 22/45 be sling shot or do you have to use the slide catch/release to load the next round?

I am rather embarassed about not knowing this.  HERE is the original link... to my "problems" in another forum.

The bolt stop/release on mine is a bit sticky sometimes if I try to drop the bolt with my thumb, but slingshotting it works fine. On a full mag or no mag, of course. An empty mag will hold the bolt stop up and prevent you from slingshotting it unless you pull back on the bolt, thumb the stop down, and release.

...but if you have a full mag it will slingshot? You just pull the bolt back and the catch falls away and you can drop the bolt on the round and it loads? See, mine won't do this...I HAVE to use the bolt catch/release? Is it fooked or normal?

ETA: It looks like my questions were answered in the linked thread. Feel free to go ahead and chime in if you have other info.

The bolt stop on mine sticks and won't fall on its own when you pull the bolt back, even when no mag is inserted. So no, I can't sling shot mine.

ETA: I don't really care though, since I hit the bolt release with my left thumb after inserting a new mag.

I have a Mk II 22/45 and it will 'slingshot' just fine.  I really like the little gun for training purposes and small game/pest dispensement.

Damn it!

I'm beginning to convince myself that I used to be able to slingshot mine and now there is something wrong with it.

I really need to stay more familair with a few of the firearms I never shoot. This thing has pretty much been fired 3 times in the last decade. A lot when i first got it, then a few years in the safe, then teaching my wife to fire a handgun(don't remember if I slig shot it then) and then again just recently to make sure everything was good to go to put it in my survival kit. That's when i really noticed the lack os sling shot ability.

Hmmm...

I may just have to shoot an email to Ruger since I'm not getting a consensus here.(although someone did post a quote from the manual earlier)

ETA

Funny thing is, I had sort of relegated it to the back of the safe as a good training(other people like my wife and kids) pistol and that's about it. Since I got it out and took it shooting to test fire it the other day I realised what a BLAST(hah puns!) it really is to shoot. I am going to start taking it with me everytime I go to the farm or the boonies or camping and possibly when I'm bow hunting as well. I don't know why I sort of forgot about the little thing just because I started buying bigger/fancier handguns. Now that I carry a 1911 I also really appreciate it's ergonomics.

Mine will not slingshot at all.  I was out with it Sunday and had forgotten about it and thought it was having a failure to feed.

Mine has been shot EXTENSIVELY, so it may be a breaking in thing also.

cleaning it once in a while helps, too.

I can slingshot mine.  In fact, the bolt release is pretty hard to depress, so I almost always slingshot it.

Maybe its the fact both 22/45's I've fired have been rental-fleet guns, but I have never been able to get all the way through one mag without assorted FTF's and FTE's. I have no desire to buy one.

I've never had a problem running through mags. I can't think of any failures at all.

I cannot slingshot mine, or my Mk II. The bolt stop may be sticking, but it does not really seemed designed to work in the "slingshot" mode.

Also, mine are a little ammo sensitive, meaning there a couple of types of ammo that WILL cause failures (most memorable is some Federal Gold Medal Target I was shooting in a match.) If run with ammo they like, such as Federal bulk pack or Automatch, they will run great for a LONG time before cleaning.

Also, many people have trouble reassembling their Mk IIs. It is not that tough once you figure out where the hammer strut goes. However, if you continue to have trouble, or just hate it, I'll buy it off of you cheap.

I have over 9,000 post and I have never heard the term slingshot.

What is it?

Pulling the bolt/slide back and releasing it.

BTW...the amount you talk has nothing to do with how much you learn, grasshoppa.
