I haven't made a single HF contact on my 857 yet

Got my general at the hamfest today, woohoo!  There's a QSO on 7212 right now, is there an alternate?  I'm not sure if my 10m dipole will tune up on 40, but it's worth a shot.  I'll hang the shorty G5RV I got at the same hamfest sometime next week.

I got nothing but noise.  I can't even copy someone elses QSO.

I've got a new LDG 1:1 balun, some coax, and a spool of 20 guage speaker wire.

I'm going to try to run something purpose built for 80 or 40.  My current setup really does work for 20m, I've had contacts on 50w (at the radio) from upstate NY down to Miami, and MN and CA.

It's just the bands REALLY suck this week.

Well, anything above 20m is going to be noisy this time of year.  It should start to improve over the next few weeks.  40m is a tough band, period, with all of the sw stuff - but at this stage of the solar cycle it's really the best bet to maximize success for a geographically diverse group.

I wish I had a 160 antenna. I was looking into a GAP Voyager DX-IV for 160, 80/75 and 40. I have to clear out a large tree in my backyard first. I don't have the land for a 160 dipole.
