Being as the other thread was getting extremely long and unorganized, I decided as co-net control of the net to start a new thread. The net is held on 40 meters on channel 7.213 @ 12:30 UTC. It is a semi-controlled net. We have decided to go with the following format. (Open to ideas) 1. Open net. 2. Call for check ins. Please give your call sign phonetically. 3. Go through list of check ins for comments. 4. Review check ins for net. 5. 73 Round 6. Close net. Again, if you have comments or questions feel free to ask them. Ceraldi (KI4xxx) and Myself (KJ4xxx) have elected ourselves as co-net controllers (this is not up for vote |

| A few comments and suggestions from a net controller. The format you are using is great. Keeping it in order and simple will be the key. I suggest starting no earlier than 0100. Local atmospheric conditions tend to quiet down after sundown. We are just before sundown at that time here. Maybe a second late net with a 40 portion at 0200 and a 75m portion after 30 minutes depending on checkins. That should cover most operators with some more nets scheduled for other bands on certain days. I know if the SHTF we will not all have internet access but running a program like netlogger would help organize the net. OMISS and a quite a few others run netlogger and it works great especially when the number of checkins go over 10 or so. It helps the NCS keep track and on pace to make the net run smooth. Also having people listening to relay if the NCS cannot hear the checkin or run that station for the NCS as an alternate control. So far it looks good and should be a successful net. I will check in as I can but i tend to be working the garden and outside stuff until about 830 local time each evening. |

I DEMAND A RECOUNT!! I'm in FL, I can do that. I might suggest taking checkins by call sign suffix. It's a bit shorter/quicker when a number of folks are trying to jump in together. |

Guys, as much as I'd like to check in, the 40 meter band is usually crap at greyline. Not to mention that the MUF has dropped to around 5 by that time. Apparently you guys are getting some NVIS action, but I can't get many of the stations here in the Fort Worth area...at that time...on that freq. I've been making a few transcon contacts so I know I'm getting out fairly well. What about deciding on a time and freq for field day. I'd like to visit with you rascals, but I can't seem to do it when the MUF drops out. Link to MUF map

We're going to need to postpone the net tonight back about 30 minutes or so. Both Ceraldi and I have a local ARES net that we need to check into which starts @ 0:30z. We should be good if we move the net to 01:00z tonight, plus it may give the Ft. Worth station a chance of getting in. Look forward to hearing you all on the air, hopefully the bands won't be as nasty tonight. ScottPD KJ4xxx |

Good net, signals improved dramatically on my end just after the last net call. Scott, you were a steady 5/7 through the static and all the other stations came right up just as the net ended. Hope to get a 40m dipole up tomorrow, tonight I was on an 80m dipole only 15 feet above the ground. Been hot around here and not felt much like doing anything outside. Will check in again tomorrow night......73 from N1xxx |

Good net tonight even with the noise. Glad you guys are happy thus far with my performance. Again, if you have any comments, good or bad, tell me. I'll have the check ins listed shortly. Thought I'd let you guys see the "net controllers" setup. http://lh4.ggpht.com/spdowling/SE8ypD0UoVI/AAAAAAAABDY/mjFIDmamrvg/STP60146.JPG?imgmax=576 Pictured: Icom 706 Kenwood TS-50 Radio Shack SWR Meter LDG Z11 Auto Tuner Yaseu FT-817ND Radio Shack HTX-202 Yaseu VX-5r |

I was the 'WJ' station trying to check in last evening. About S7 noise at this end. Net control was in and out here due to QSB. 130' folded dipole, apex at 45 feet, 100 w. Will try again. WJxx, Flagstaff, AZ |

Ok I'll put you down in the log. If you could, give me your entire call in a PM? Thanks. |

UPDATE!::: ARFCOM Net is now using NetLogger to log the net. You can participate by downloading the software for free at: netlogger.org/download.html Install the software and run it, once up click on "Nets Online" and you should see "AR15 Net" listed. Click Monitor and your in the mix. -A |

Even though its a good drill to try and pull the stations out of the noise, it will sure be nice to have a couple of nights without any major storm systems moving across the country and S8/9 static levels. I was hearing almost everyone on the net. Going to dig out one of my amps that are packed away and see if I can get it hooked up and working in the next couple of days, hopefully I'll be heard a little better through the noise. Scott, your 20m inverted V dipole is performing great! Your audio punches through the static well and you are very copiable here in MA. If you had an amplifier, and a 40m resonant antenna, you'd be booming in here. Going to borrow a slingshot tomorrow and see if I can get my antenna up another 25 feet or so and maybe orient it a little more broadside to the SE. 73 until tomorrow. N1xxx |
Same here last night, I just got my new FT897D setup, I could make out a conversation on 7.213 but with the static noise it was impossible to follow. Not knowing the rig better, is there a setting/config to minimize the noise and isolate the voice? |
Yeah, smack the dsp button then hit the "dnr" (digital noise reduction) and sometimes the noise blanker will help (find NB in one of the menus) with some static crashes. It won't be dramatic but sometimes its just enough. On the dnr if you hold it in it will go to the menu where you can st the amount 13 is about right IIRC. find a good sounding station and turn the dnr up until you can just barley detect distortion, that seems to be about right for weaker station to me. -Bill |
Using the RF gain will help. By using the RF gain to reduce the overall input to the receiver, you can change the signal to noise ratio and this makes the signals easier to hear by cutting down the powerful static crashes. |
Try turning off your pre-amp (or, in the case of the 857, 'turning on' the bypass option, so you bypass the pre-amp). This will reduce a good amount of your static noise. From the quick-menus, choose menu "M" , and activate the "IPO" option (button A I think). A blocked-in letter "I" will appear above the frequency, and you should see the noise level drop down considerably. You have to activate (or deactivate) the IPO for each band. |
If you were hearing what I was - "something" buried deep in the noise, chances are that nothing you can do will dig it out. Noise was S6-7 here, signals seemed like S2-3 at best. Even DSP can't help much under those conditions. |

I'm not talking about DSP (I was actually replying to the 857 comment). Turning off the pre-amp, which adds quite a bit of noise, will help pull those weak signals out of the artificially added noise. |
One way to use get the most out of the RF gain is to crank it all the way up and crank the AF up...then back off the RF gain until you can comfortable copy the other station....leave the AF alone...use RF gain to control the volume... |
| I wanted to drop this link for the net members. I haven't tried them out myself but overheard an OM recommend them over the air. I checked out the webpage and the prices look very reasonable considering the amount of wire involved and especially the labor involved. If any one gets one post an AAR. |
Ah ... ok. With any decent moder rig, I personally advise people to keep the pre-amp turned off unless its needed. It generally doesn't help much, and as you say, can add extra noise. |

Indeed. Ever since I figured out how to turn it off, I haven't turned it back on since. Much more enjoyable. |
Managed to check in....then the band went away. ![]() 73' KI4BUN |

Point of information for the net control: My callsign formerly N1GJO has been changed as of today 6-14-2008, New callsign is N1UZI- all other info is the same. Will update Echolink server tomorrow to reflect my new call. I didn't even find this out myself until I just did a search on the FCC database and found they acted on my license application. |
