for around $800.

My father is looking into a generator and I was wondering if you guys had any advise to offer? Right now he is looking at a $800 unit with a Briggs and Stratton engine that supplies around 5.5kW. I dont know the brand though. He can of course spend a little more if it will get him a much better generator.

I'd vote for one of the super efficient inverter models by Yamaha or Honda.. but they definitely provide a lot less power than a non inverter model. The quiet and the gas efficiency are great. An EU2000 can power the necessities in my house like heater/fridge/window AC unit and such, so it's enough for me but wouldn't be enough for everyone.

"Best" is kind of relative.

What do you need to power?

I have a 5.5kw unit that I bought from Home Depot to power my well.
The well requires 220v and this was the best I could afford that had enough power to run the pump.
Still runs fine after 6yrs.

For electronics, etc. I would go with a Honda or Yamaha inverter type.
the Honda eu2000 is super quiet.

Get a Honda. New you will pay more than $800, but you can find lightly used ones for under $800. I have two, a 5k watt I paid $500 for and a really nice 3.5k watt I paid $350 for.

What does he want to run with the generator?  Is he planning on extension cords and the fridge and a lamp or the whole house including AC?  Does he have gas or electric heat and water heater?  Does he have a well or city water?
