Depending on where you are, should be some frozen lakes by now. I was thinking of giving it a shot. I haven't done much other than a short trip on vacation in Canada. Most ice around here isn't crazy thick so I just ordered a hand auger which I think should suit me fine. In Yellowknife last year, I watched the guide use a gas powered auger go through all the way down to the engine, have to pull it out, add an extension and go back down to get all the way through the ice 
In WA, we should have some good whitefish, perch, panfish, kokanee, rainbow trout, and burbot depending on the lake and area. I've heard you can even get channel cats if you find the right area and the right lakes are safely frozen over. |

| I haven't been yet but I am going Sunday. We didn't really get fishable ice here until the beginning of January and every time I have been off the weather has been awful. First it was -20 and 20 mph wind. Then last Saturday morning we got almost a foot of snow in the morning so I wasn't driving an hour one way to pull my sled through that. There is over a foot anywhere I will be heading by now. Perch and smelt are the targets. |

Heh. Whole lot of driving, not a lot of fishing. Couldn't leave early yesterday like I wanted, so I ended up leaving early after noon and only getting there with time for about an hour of light. A few other people out on the lake, but everyone was leaving about when I got there. Looked like one group had a few Perch. Spent the night in town, got up at the crack of dawn, first one out on the lake...... and then the snow started. I knew it was supposed to hit, but it started coming down pretty fast. A guy came by about 9 with his kid. They stayed for about 25 min and were gone. I left by 11, the picture of the road there was bare pavement in the travel lanes at 6:30am.

That was near Winthrop. There's a few lakes on the Colville Indian Res that are frozen right now too. Then there is Curlew and a few places north of Spokane. Moses lake had good ice, but last I heard it wasn't looking great anymore. This next week of cold should help. Banks and all the lower lakes are either unsafe and sloppy or no ice at all. Moses lake has lots of Perch and Walleye among other things.
I want to fish Banks for Whitefish and Burbot... but I'd be better off trying to pull my boat out from where it's stored and taking it over the pass for that right now. I dont think the lake has any ice at all, if it does it's just thin stuff down on the south end. |
| Oh ok. I would imagine Curlew Lake would be pretty fun to try. I have some property up that way, just haven't been up there in this winter yet to check it out. I don't know if Curlew Lake would freeze over.....maybe enough just to get away from the shore a little bit, but thats chancing it. |

Pulled some half dozen perch out a week or two ago. They were all like half eggs. Insane how many they can fit in there. Attached File |
