Found this guy crawling around on one of my cantaloupe flowers. I don't think he is a pest but I would like to identify it. Anyone know what kind of bug? At least maybe the family or something that I can do a google search on?
I've looked for "small brown bug with mandibles" BILLIONS of hits on that and a few other searches but so far nothing matches what I have. Also, anyone know what kind of beetle is in the 3rd pic? You'd be surprised at how many "small black beetles" there are!

Here is the pics I took.

That beetle is more than likely a Japanese beetle. Not sure what the other bug is.

But those beetles will eat the shit out of your plants leafs. Knock them into a bucket of soapy water, make it so they cant fly out of the bucket.

The first one resembles Lady Bug larva, but the color isn't right.

Is the second one all black or is it green?  Our Japanese Beetles look like small June Bugs, but that one looks too small.

Check out number 22: Hister Beetle.

That first insect is a thrip. They don't cause too much damage in squash but can be rough on melons if you have any.

It's all black but it's iridescent so that is why is looks green in the pic.

Thanks for the replies.
The one that you guys say is a Thrip, do they eat aphids? I saw one this morning on a Mandevilla that had a bunch of aphids and was hoping he was going to chow down on them.
If not then I'll be squashing them this evening.

EDIT: Are we sure about thrips? I've looked at thousands of pics this morning and haven't found any that match what I have. I'll forward the pics to the county ag extension to see if they know too.

I've been there numerous times but without knowing the genus or species its difficult to find anything. Doing a search for "small brown bug" or "black beetle' doesn't do much for me.
