Glock 26 or 27, any smaller than that and you are into sub calibers. Though I'd rather have a 380 than nothing.

I've found the Glock 19 is almost as concealable, but I'm 6'2" and 225 pounds...but I'd gladly give you 25 pounds of that to help with your ability to CCW.

look at one of khar's CW series, you can get them in 9mil, 40 smith and 45acp.

or their PM series if you want a pistol a bit smaller.

Take a look at a Kahr MK9.

Add Pearce magazine base and a stainless steel guide rod.

I'd also recommend a Glock 26/ 27. Mainly on the basis that: 1. You can use Glock 22/ 23 or 17/ 19 mags as higher capacity backup mags 2. Affordability 3. Carries very compact, light, and comfortable 4. The reliability of a Glock.

I have carried a G27 in a Raven Concealment Phantom holster IWB for several months now and it's so comfortable I barely notice it's there. And this is transitioning from a G23 in a Bladetech UCH. I have two tone Mepros on my G27 and it makes for a great carry package.

Additionally, since you are an XD 40 owner, perhaps look into a XD 40 SC (Sub Compact) as well. For the fact that you already have some extra mags for it and the experience of operating an XD. I own an XD 9 SC, but have no experience wearing it as CCW.

I have a full sized 1911 that fits very nicely in my leather fanny pack concealment rig (Roma 7070).  There is even space for a spare mag or 2 and a few items like cash, CWP, DL, CCs, etc.  I don't carry very often but this rig is very comfortable and effective.  You can take it off your waist and sling it over a shoulder or whatever, carry it for a while that way and then put it back on your waist - in full view of "the public" and nobody will know you are carrying.  It is a great little rig...

+1 on a compact XD since you are already familiar with the XD.

I carry a G27quite a bit CCW with a G22 mag in pocket for extra ammo.  Very easy to conceal.  I've ordered one of the new Ruger 380's for an additional option, but will probably still use the 27 the most.

I'm a bit bigger than you (6'1" 225lbs) and already had a SIG 228, but started looking for a "summer carry" pistol and loved the Kahr CW9 - big enough to allow for good gripping, small enough not to print - even in just shorts and a light t-shirt.
I don't regret my purchase a bit

+1 for the CW9

There is a section in the handgun forum dedicated to CCW.

But to answer your question, I carry a G27 everyday.  But I have carried my full size G22 without a problem.  So, no the compact xd 40 is not to big to conceal you just need the right set up.

It's winter here in Akron, Ohio.  I can conceal a full size pistol during the winter/fall/spring months.  Durring the summer, is when I have the problem and want a smaller weapon.

Having a CCW has ment to me, a change in lifestyle.  A change in what I wear daily.  I've had to purchase shirts that are 2XL instead of large or XL.  Baggy sweatshirts and pants that are 2" too big (for IWB holsters)

You can hid anything you need to, you just have to change your daily style of wear.  If you end up wearing business suits or more formal wear, you'll find that a smaller weapon may be necessary.  In that case, look at the Ruger LCP.

+1 on the PPS. We can't keep 'em in the shop. The gun Glock should have made, but didn't.

Nothing in the world wrong with any snubnose .38.  Those things flat-out disappear anywhere you put 'em.

You shouldn't have any problem concealing a Glock 19. It's about the same size as an XD subcompact because of the large slide on the xd. Get a good holster like a this
