| Drinking Maxwell House coffee this morning we brewed from a can that expired in mid 2006, smells as fresh as a new can and tastes great. |
| Its one of the large metal cans, been stored in the pantry since late 2004 or early 2005. Not sure how long it will last now that its open, but we opened it last weekend and it still smells as fresh as a new can, and makes great tasting coffee. Good info to know on storing coffee. |

I think you can keep it in the refrigerator or freezer to make it last longer once opened. I used to work with a guy who used to be a "coffee taster" for a manufacturer and he used to keep his ground coffee in the freezer. I guess the whole roasted beans last longer than the ground, much like wheat versus flour.
We drink a decent amount of coffee here, so I've got plenty of those large cans in the food storage. With my caffeine addiction, it's pretty much an essential until I can wean off. |

Keeping the grounds in the freezer works really well. That is what I do and the grounds keep their flavor for a long time. |

One of my various unfinished projects is to get green beans and roast them on my propane grill. I can drink canned coffee but I really like grinding relatively fresh beans and making a french press of the good stuff. For now my coffee preps include several pounds of beans, some canned, some Via instant, and then I'm SOL on coffee I guess (and some other stuff too by then probably...).
There are canned green beans to be had that will keep for a long time. Once roasted they offgas which is why the packages have the little plastic disk (one way valve to let CO2 out but not let air in to make the beans stale). canned green coffee beans Homeroaster Homeroasting I know some people only care so much about their coffee and if zombies are smashing in your door no one will think taking the time to do this is practical. The most serious SHTF I was in involved a fair amount of down time punctuated by periods of intense, stressful, crisis. If you like doing things yourself partly for the enjoyment of knowing and doing the process home roasting might be cool and you could carry on during a disruption depending on what exactly happened. |
