Most orienteering that civvies do can be done with any of the small quality compasses.
Silva , Brunton, ETC.

The USGI one is great but chances are you will never need to cellphone your 8 digit grid coordinate to your wife, so all those features are unnecessary.

depends on your elevation, as altitude changes of several thousand feet have put bubbles in every liquid filled compass I've tried.  I have not tried Sunto yet though.  The best way is to know how to read a map good and know where you are.

Silva Ranger CL.  It happens to have Backpackers magazine Editors Choice Gold award.
I have a degree in Geography, work professionally in Geomatics, have worked for a company with 'GPS' in the name, navigate with map and compass backcountry recreationally, compete in orienteering meets and I was the navigator for my team when I was doing amateur adventure racing.

Based on my knowledge, skills and requirements the Ranger CL is fucking awesome.

ETA: My Ranger has had no problems from sea level to over 14,ooo feet.

+2

I keep one in the truck glovebox and one in my BOB.  One of these days I need to learn how to properly use it but it is robust beyond belief and I love ebing able to use it without any external lighting.
