I just hit the 24 hour mark on my fast.  All I've had during the last 24 hours is water.  I've been hungry, but not too bad.  I have a slight headache, but nothing disabling, and that could be from not getting my coffee today.

My plan is to go another 24 hours, then stop the fast for 12 days, then repeat for 4 cycles.

I'm doing this for 2 reasons, one I wanted to see what it would be like to have no food for 48 hours.  Second reason is explained at http://news.usc.edu/63669/fasting-triggers-stem-cell-regeneration-of-damaged-old-immune-system/

I have gone fasting for a days on end without realizing it. I get busy and get stuck doing something and by the time I finish, I'm too tired to eat and fall asleep

It's all about staying mentally occupied in my experience

I fast Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, from 6 PM the night before, to 6AM the next day (so 36 hours each time).

It is more about the reduction of insulin like growth factor 2.

That's an important part of it I think.

Recreational Eating [disorder] is more easily avoided by staying productively involved in something interesting.

Try 800 calories per day for 10 weeks then get back to me.

Staying busy is definitely the key to ignoring your body screaming for calories.

It has made me realize a lot of people will survive a very long time with little to no food in a long term shtf event.

Do you realize that restarting your immune system like that might regenerate, but also makes it forget what you were immune to right?

That study is imperfect and isn't ready for experimenting with yet.

Though, fasting is a very old method of doing various things with the body, it probably won't harm you much.  But unless you are trying to fix a specific issue you are probably not going to be too happy....

So, if I were to give fasting a try, later on I could end up getting the Chickenpox again?

I think I'll pass, because I really hated it as a kid.

About once every 1-2 years I do a 12 week stretch averaging about 800 net calories (intake - outtake, not including BMR) per day.

Its tough but I was amazed at how fast my body adjusted to it in terms of energy and day to day working.

I'm up to 46 hours on only water.  headache is gone and energy is up.  I will end the fast at the 48 hour mark due to missing the act of eating and good food, not because of hunger.

Yup, 2-4 days in and you're not hungry so long as you eat and drink something every 2-3 hours.

Is it also possible that the immune system might "reboot" and forget how to react appropriately to certain substances and - BAM - now you're allergic to stuff you didn't use to be?  Supposedly, the reason a lot of kids aren't allergic is that the mother passes appropriate antibodies to the child during breastfeeding.   Will fasting essentially cause you to lose those antibodies?

My Dad does this about two handles a week with sparse fillers

I did a 72 hour last week. Once you get past the 48 you really don't think about it, of course this is with plenty of water.

I had a blocked colon a few weeks ago and get symptoms if I eat much. I've been drinking rooibos tea, mostly because it's healthful and it's something to drink. I think it's really taken the edge off my hunger.

I have an appt in a couple weeks, I think I have a gall bladder problem. I don't want to spend another 4 days in the hospital so I'm not risking another attack, or whatever it was.

There is also a good brand of mango juice that helps, one variety had a good amount of protein. A small cup of that is kind of a meal substitute. It's helped me keep my energy level up at work and stuff.

fasting will not harm most people. it is something people have been doing for tens of thousands of years deliberately.

whether it does any good is something else, but since it is unlikely to cause harm, I see nothing wrong with moderate fasting anymore than I see anything wrong with eating so called organic food. There may be no real benefits but it probably will not harm one any.

Its all in what you eat.  I have done it and lost 40 lbs in 12 weeks with no real loss of lean muscle mass or bone density, and I was much better hydrated due to upped water intake.

We have tried Paleo/Primal, but struggled with finding things to eat.  The weight loss was through a program at my doctors office.
