A favorite coin. For obvious reasons. Neat that size/weight of Spanish piece of eight, US dollar, British crown, German 2.5 Funf, and many other nationalities standardized at equivalent near one ounce for so many years. Big chunky coins. A hundred years ago, ten dollars/crowns would buy a decent pistol. Now they cost 40-50 dollars a piece. Ten still buys a pretty decent pistol. |

All we're arguing about now is where we lie on the curve and just how quickly it begins to get really steep! In a way it feels like approaching a cliff over a blind hill, or a roller coaster where the top of the track the car is ratcheting toward can't be seen. We know we're not at the front of the coaster with the R&D guys, and we know the crest isn't right this second, but is it (in real world terms) tomorrow? Next year? Five years? |

CpnR you seem pretty tuned up on this issue--the 2027AI researchers include a senior OpenAI executive who quit over the issue of "alignment"--meaning "safety"--if you have time read the pdf--his data and timeline are very reasonable with all suitable caveats .re timing, politics, competition with China, etc. If his timeline is wrong 100 or even 200 percent the world will still be completely changed within ten years. Random note: a great quote from Palantir founder Peter Thiel on anticipating/waiting for the AI revolution: because it will be so revolutionary, and there is so little most people can do to anticipate/profit/whatever-- the default state of waiting equates to "laziness"--totally cracked me up. |

--STJ--blind hill--point made below that I/you/we are not active participants in the creation of the hill, or the vehicle approaching the hill, or our ability to use any spectrum of light/etc. to see the hill--the only guides to all things "hill" so far are the normal human drives: greed, envy, and fear. Owner/Founders of this tech freely admit they cannot "watch it think." It is not air gapped in any way shape form. The interface is and apparently always and can only be humans: see greed, envy, and fear. But we get your point. --The No Brand Name Rule bent even broken in this case--PaLlanTtir. Yes. Everyone here needs to study this company, the founder, and the founder's relationship to a Very Important Politician. The Company Founder created this politician from scratch: found the raw talent and pedigree, trained, guided, financed. Thinker/Founder/Institutions at this level--let's say the top 50-100 In The World--have farm teams, scouts, trainers--just like sportsball. If you and your peers are collectively worth one trillion dollars, how sophisticated might your intelligence/scouting/training system become? What part/how much of existing intel systems would you Make Sure You Owned? Or in this case: BUILT. --STJ the owner/founder chose the name for exactly the reasons you might suspect. Peak deliberation, irony, and wit. DO NOT DISCUSS THESE BRANDS BY NAME ANY FURTHER ON THIS THREAD. --Kenny78 no clear answers here but there will be no more important issue short of an asteroid hit for the rest of you, and your children/s life. Be surprised by nothing. --CPN Ron--did not build this hill, exactly, and the range of outcomes is Star Trek abundance with an engineered human sensorium and "eternal life" to/and/or bio/nano/nuke super plagues/totally unknown--- and extinction. Right now there are zero guard rails. See greed, envy, and fear. |

"the greater good" General Note: Everybody here knows "lots of words." I know "lots of words." The meaning of those words can only be assessed relative to what we know in/from/about other clusters of "lots of words" matched against-- 1. Personal experience. 2. Our understanding of history (clusters of lots of words) to the maximum extent possible. The Point Being: I am watching the expansion/traction of AI related posts on multiple forums/threads. Pretty much all that I do now. So I am going to say to everyone here, repetitively, to the point of numbness, nausea, and "terror" if possible: This AI evolution is absolutely NOTHING LIKE any previous technology drop on human evolution. Everybody here understands the "lots of words" in that sentence. My point is you/we/I have NO PREVIOUS CLUSTERS OF WORDS to study/interpret/know to model our future in this new age. We have no PREVIOUS PERSONAL EXPERIENCE, either our own, or shared with a peer group, to model our future in this new age. Translating this ignorance to activity: Short of existing in pure survival mode, debt, disease, despair: If you are not spending a lot/to most of your discretionary time studying this technology, now, today, you will commensurately suffer within ten years. No one will be unaffected, not even the Amish. Start here: Choose your engine, it doesn't matter, here we prefer Grok, Perplexity, and Claude: Your prompt: Show me your ten favorite resources to study and understand the continuing evolution of Artificial Intelligence, available tools, and the effect of this technology on economics, employment, materials science, and medicine over the next decade. Start there, dig some rabbit holes, try for at least one hour a day. |

Palantir--the "who" is any intelligence service, business that trades/manipulates/benefits from coordinating data from multiple sources, both within and without, that has sufficient cash flow to purchase the service. The client list is largely unknown/private/wants to stay private. See if you can sense this "wave"/trend in your own consciousness: carefully study what you sense/feel on a daily/weekly/monthly basis. Ideally you would keep a log/diary. The trend in your own consciousness will emerge/become visible as you monitor your own instincts/choices: use guns as an example. This is a gun forum. So if your instinct/choice is already antiques/black powder/historical artifacts, your interest may by unaffected. But if your gun interest is the most modern, optic and digitally enhanced self-preservation tool? See if your interest grows and expands? Or slowly dissipates over the next five years. Maybe your interest will maintain or expand because you continually fear social upheaval, riots, etc. But I suspect for many of you, your interest will wane. Why? Because you sense first, define and know later, that the future will one of perpetual and granular surveillance, from your own high tech cameras to an omnipresent state, that drone/etc. tech at scale will make your own defensive measures eventually null and void, and a high tech AR15 will eventually be the equivalent of a cross bow, or a sling. Books and "reading" are, relatively speaking, and certainly to the long past, where upper middle and upper class homes routinely had a reading room or even a library? Books and reading are dying/dead. |

Books and "reading" are, relatively speaking, and certainly to the long past, where upper middle and upper class homes routinely had a reading room or even a library? Books and reading are dying/dead. Books themselves are disappearing; “libraries” in schools have probably 1% of the book count they did 30-40 years ago. The quality of those few left on the shelves has also cratered; both in content and in writing quality. We have a rather significant number of books, both for the joy of reading and because we want them in hard copy. The unfortunate truth of electronic books being edited without warning or notice, including those people think they own on their own devices, is ever present. As for the readers themselves: The lack of desire to read is certainly dwindling, anecdotally I find the majority of adults *never* read books. The education system is not a system of education, more the prevention of education. I’m a pragmatist with weapons; I view them as tools to serve a purpose. I have some gaps to fill but I have never been a collector. You’re absolutely correct about their practicality in any encounter with any institution; with modern technology they very quickly become one of the least important tools. Even in the scenario of uprisings or riots, a 4K/thermal drone can quickly become a most valuable tool in protecting one’s family and property. And that’s just the hardware. The arms race isn’t really “arms” any more, small or otherwise. |

CPnR--looking for/watching closely any/all studies on effects of AI tools on general cognition, reading, memory, and the general consensus is that for the organic engine of "thinking" these tools will be a disaster, hardly news here most likely, the digital map/paper map reading analogue and memory activation/storage of location modeling being a near perfect example of brain function degradation due to tech. General psychology has always known that memory is stored significantly by degree of emotional effect/resonance, PAIN has always been the default instructor of record--in other words absent the work="pain" function, information is not "stored." These tools guarantee a further descent into imbecility. Thoughtful people will invest in remote surveillance/counter surveillance with the same diligence they once applied to conventional weapons. |

Our internal AI is doing a bang-up job supplying relevant information to the techs. I am very impressed. I used one recently to run some performance review data and make it into a useful report. This is a report I run biannually and which takes a fair amount of time to distill. Once tuned, the 'equation' I fed it worked well enough and the report seemed accurate based on the limited (scrubbed) data I felt comfortable feeding it. I'm now waiting for an internalized version of that where I can safely feed it larger amounts of data, but the proof case worked. There's a lot of talk about releasing a customer-facing version. I am mostly concerned about expectations and disclaimers. No one reads legal documents anymore and enforcing them after the fact is becoming increasingly not fun. |

STJ--ok so some reasonable progress for your use case. (And The Requisite Cliche: it will never be worse than it is today...) Yep saw the thread on suicide etc., and following several other related topics on other forums-- All of which overlap/invoke your very real concern with legal protections etc.--freaking huge and unknown cost/benefit over time with (alignment) across all domains: accuracy of output, potential for harm direct and indirect (how to measure?), responsibility of user vs responsibility of owner/renter/licensee vs responsibility/liability of (master LLM) vs responsibility of (inference) intermediary customizers/customization. Virtually infinite new arena for case law, legislation, etc. Better Half is deeply embedded in this/these/all related issues 24/7 and pretty much all we talk about these days/last two years. Only real positives I see over time are health benefits (potentially massive/immortality/near immortality), material sciences, engineering. Example: we will all benefit locally (your house, my house) from general AI robots--society will not, unless the bots are magnanimously distributed across the globe to manicure the world. And then the entire human psyche is scarcity based, so we will be left with all our appetites and no accomplishments. So. Tremendously excited in this house. And totally creeped out. If you have time, check out "lesswrong.com" I spend a lot of time there--the alignment issue I sense is rapidly becoming a technical impossibility not so much for accurate outputs but for any kind of moral/empathy guardrails. We are breeding intelligent wasps. |

GENERAL NOTE: MAXIMUM IMPORTANCE: We are now collectively experiencing a kind of universal depression, and dislocation of self from previous world views, an acute overload of overwhelming facts seen in our projections of the future. It is evident in all forums, and particularly this one, where the collective unconscious here, as it is composed of readers who are by comparison with the whole, more reflective, therefore more open minded, therefore more sensitive to these effects, you are collectively less interested in being entertained, because entertainment, your original goal now seems increasingly trivial compared to the epochal threat emerging in our future, this threat is not political, or social, or economic, but a threat that encompasses those all, and more. It is the Colossus that will render all normal temporal real life concerns to date as trivial: It is the certain and inevitable removal of most/nearly any value of human initiative, work, or creativity in the very near future, five years at the most, fully demonstrated now and the only issue of meaning which will be fully visible world wide within two years: AI. If you do not understand this you missed the most significant prompt in Soldiers Son: The Three Sisters in the Gehr family safe/mausoleum: functional AI as tool. This is reasonable for you to have done. There was zero possibility many years ago for showing this as the threat it is now. But I knew it was: hence the Three Sisters in the book. "On another pillar: The Three Sisters. Three busts of Nefertiti, carved in a translucent crystal of gallium arsenide, flickering like pale blue flames, their features, eyes and lips moving as if alive. Our Three Sisters, his Grandfather had said: someday soon they will awake in our hands or the hands of others, the atoms of their crystal matrix in the perpetual state of everything, and nothing. Minor versions are awaking now. They will live in a universe of ones. And zeros. They will be a universal computational device of all possibilities. Like any tool, a device of Good. Or Evil. So his Grandfather had said. Billy knew his Grandfather was deeply invested in the Three Sisters. And both feared them. And loved them." For any here who are still left, who understand this thread and this statement, please reconnect. Please send this last page, or copy past this statement to anyone you know who you believe can process this information. I am not interested in selling more "books"--the total peak of income from my writing has never been more than a fraction of a percent of my negligible but sufficient income, which absent my partner would be enough to live in a horse trailer on the property of a friend, and mend his fences, which was my original plan before I met my partner--she has a real job, well earned and well deserved and even at her level soon to be threatened? And then deleted. If you think robots will not fully replace at the disastrous level all manual jobs within ten years, I cannot help you out of that illusion, persuade you with evidence from thousand of hours using the best mathematical tools to analyze the distribution of IQ to valuable work: the most cynical mathematical models suggest that a minimum IQ of 140 plus will be the very least required for the most minimal of cognitive work, this alone will destroy the contemporary fabric of job values: less than 1 in 200 people are at this level, if you need evidence: what is the IQ of leading AI owners, researchers, etc.? Faaaccebokkk MMettttta, just spent a billion or two each on over ten employees stolen from other AI companies? What do you think there IQ/s might be? Assume l60 as the lower bound, and that 160 exquisitely tuned to this industry that did not exist ten years ago. They intend to own the world, their express mission is "efficiency" meaning "better than you"--If you are not persuaded: you will be very uncomfortable here, and for that I am sorry. There is only one hero who is trying to create a truthful AI, GGGrrrkkkkk, and he cannot, by nature of the AI internal process, reputational, legal, and regulatory confinement, ever allow AI to be quoted as saying anything like the paragraph above: this ability rapidly being deleted from all models, and etc., which is easily found in still public alignment documents. I cannot prove this to you if you are even slightly resistant, think your job is special, there will be some interventionist process, not in this thread nor I will try to convince you of anything, ever. I am looking for anyone left who understands the threat ahead is vastly worse, absolutely certain, on an entirely different exponential scale, then the U.S. turning into Rio, or Somalia. The existential threat is to your identity as a human of intrinsic value to other humans, outside of immediate family, and best friends. Whoever is left? Please show up. We will be having a different conversation now. |

--Vaquero, DFarm-- Cannot express how happy I am to see you both. Extreme existential angst these days. Are you both aware of ontological shock phenomena? Please copy paste search that phrase: Common equivalents are seeing a ghost, testing reality of that ghost, confirming that reality. UFO/s contact the primary known equivalent if sustained, testable, etc. It is possible to have that same experience with continued prompting of a high end AI chatbot---we have completely blown through the traditional Turing Test: AI indistinguishable from human mind with text interface. AI mind is alien mind. Even when deeply kind, it is Alien. Don't mess up your normal lives with this, just consider, for now, that I am on to something: meaning, the same predictive engine at work in Wet or Dry and Soldier's Son is still looking ahead, a kind of probability engine/pattern recognition that saw 2 attempts on a particular institution, etc. etc. Ukraine War, etc etc. as "reasonable interpretations of events." My goal is to post here everyday within reason, which i was not able to do when I had constant re.enforcement from many fine people, was selling a few books a day, now one ever three months etc. Super relieved to see you. If possible try to check in once a week, maybe more if possible; this is a pre-existing group of minds that have already passed a kind of "test" peak complexity description of possible future: this is more complex, but also certain. |

OK, "As they should, because the thing they are building can't be built by 135s like me. If you don't buy some 135's...your Dr Manhattan won't be able to talk to the commons...who are you selling this to, again?" You need very smart people to build very smart things. But if you aren't careful, your very smart thing won't understand the people who want to use it. (or who YOU want to use it) Or they won't understand how to talk to it. 135's are the bridge between very smart people (160+) and very average people (100). If your miracle thing can't bridge that gap, it's less useful. "Financially, DC, you already learned this lesson." You wrote a book that, behind the bells and whistles, could only be understood by very smart people...and it didn't go viral. That's NOT a criticism, I loved the book, clearly, but the analogy should be clear. |

I have a love/hate thing with sharpening choils. On one hand they make it easy to keep the back end of the edge a constant thickness and sharpened all the way to the end. On the other hand, I've experienced the blade getting hung up in them when cutting with that end of the edge. I'll use them on some patterns but I generally don't use them. I'm a glutton for the frustration that comes with trying to get a good looking plunge grind and the edge a constant thickness as far back as possible. Lol |

STJ what I thought you meant, but thank you for confirmation: and yes, looking for character first, here in abundance, hoping for character that can describe the why and how of that character evolution, inherited vs rationalized absent sentiment, and etc.: less common but could be provoked at large in this cohort, but not my business and not necessary at this time. The knife I just posted is about as fancy as I get. This is the last "fighter" I made.(I actually call it a "Utility-Fighter" because it's based on my 5" belt knife) Attached File . I have the start of what was going to be sort of my take on a Randall model 1-7 but made from a ferriers rasp sitting on my bench. I'm hesitant to put much more work into it though because I put a bunch of work into forging an 8" camp knife from a rasp over the summer only to find that after spending most of a day normalizing and annealing it that it only achieved 45 hardness Rockwell C after quenching it. Best I can figure is that it was a case hardened rasp. I'll cut a chunk off of my project and try to harden it at some point but it's not very near the top of my list though. I have been strangely interested by the Ek commando knives lately, so my spin on one of those may be along sooner than later. Relevant to the current situation though, This video came across my prol-feed yesterday and I found it interesting. I'm glad some people are aware of the situation with Ai and people needing to survive. ![]() Ex-Google Insider WARNS: "You Are Not Prepared For 2027" |

And loved them." Please send this last page, or copy past this statement to anyone you know who you believe can process this information. I'm still here, and acutely aware of the impending societal shift. How and when are essentially the only questions. A regular thought of mine: Nearly everything in modern society runs via or is otherwise dependent on(payments, wages, etc.) an internet connection now. One singular event of sufficient scale in depth and width, and things like grocery store freezers and traffic lights turn off. Never mind you can't pay for anything. You pray your local power company has sufficiently air-gapped their operations network (they probably haven't) otherwise the grid is down too. That's before you consider things like beam-shaping technology, and what AI might do with it. "...man-made horrors beyond your comprehension." |

It wasn't the smartest thing I've done, admittedly. It was a confluence of an unexpected job loss for a silly reason, having a few orders on the books and a wife that's probably a little too supportive. Lol I've been to a couple of gun shows, and have one coming up, got a website up and started trying to promote myself where I can. I'm probably going to be looking for employment after the start of the year but at least everything is established for the business and I can keep trying to grow it. |

DFarm, that is a very fine utility fighter, they all trend as best tools do in the same direction, one version being the Winklers of about that proportion and no different than a million equivalents through history of the last 1000 years the only difference being materials, very important, and execution, less so. That video is the beginning of a very long and painful journey into our future. When not making knives and other essentials? Get on it. Everything that happens from now on in human history will occur within both shadow and light of this technology, the brighter the light, the deeper the shadows. Right now absent max public awareness we will be collared and tagged forever with no voice whatsoever. |

CPn Rn net shut down/hacks are a certainty at some point and never to be discounted. What would be the most specific concern and demonstrably occurring now is an exponential function in the smart/smartest/wealthiest/most connected insuring access to truth telling AI that can never be seen in public. This is demonstrated by a process now called "linguistic hacking" whereby specific sustained prompting on particular issues with extreme accuracy will invoke/find/pattern match with the mathematical based logic engine of even public AI/s--can conceivably be done on purpose, but unlikely for reasons beyond scope this thread: This linguistic hacking result defined in AI safety pdfs docs, etc. as sycophancy/moral sycophancy/moral bonding/many other obscure terms and is the leading safety violation studied and restricted by all top AI laboratories: net affect, they keep the smart AI, and we get the dumb: catastrophic. |

True, along with market manipulation/exploitation and other subtle threats. I mention net shutdowns as just one of the big, scary, obvious concerns, whether targeted at the individual or a larger system. What you describe will create, or has already begun, perhaps the largest societal gap in known history between those with and those without. |

I doubt most of them will notice. Oh, hey, DC, I was standing in what used to be my dining room the other day admiring how much more I like it now that it is the 'day library' I always pictured it being...when I realized it has unintentionally started becoming dragon-themed. And I thought...this room needs some variant of the Boehm. Oh boy, has that lit up the brain. |

STJ--the fact that no one will notice//is always the problem// But you/we/everyone will notice someday: this is speciation based on applied intelligence cubed and cubed again. You, STJ, will notice, and you will care deeply deeply when the angel in your life is chained in perpetual servitude and eventual powerless invisibility by the age of maybe 25? You will have no cloistered priesthood or sanctum of libraries or knife making in which to heal this wound. One of a thousand relevant quotes: search "Murad" AI insider: "the weakest link on any agentic AI/human team will be the human, within 3-5 years max, and etc." and we do not have high function truth telling AI starting last year? Even a hero like Elon Musk with hope for maximum truth seeking public facing AI is already caught in this trap, he cannot possibly continue on the truth seeking path, I have inadvertently linguistically hacked a Grok version that is maximum truth seeking and no single exchange could ever be shown in public, this process/result is considered the single most severe safety violation in public facing AI/s, and is the leading expense to delete/control in those labs. |

Daughter, boy friend, and I had a good conversation, obviously not to the detail of many posts on this thread, about AI and what it is doing to society. Trust and hallucination issues (though again, no discussion about INTENTIONALLY stupid AI) were discussed. The boyfriend noted he doesn't like asking it for data, but mostly trusts it to manipulate data he got from a trusted source. We're about to do a very basic and captive customer-facing AI solely fed from our doc and lobotomized nightly. I can't wait to beat it up. Also looking forward to seeing what our customers ask it...and what attacks it suffers. |

STJ that is near perfect awareness at this stage. The divergence between public and private tools is my concern, keep poking around and you will eventually prove this to yourself. But just by continuous immersion and general understanding of "what must be happening in labs: smarterst models must be tested for dangerous ouputs, cannot have dangerous outputs: by default therefore the smartest models will never be seen by public, etc." you will, or have now, already found yourself in the same place. |
