| What are good brands of outer shells for hiking/ outdoor activities and possible SHTF? (i.e. The North Face, Moutain Hardwear, etc.) I am located in TN so I dont need something for subzero temps but I would like to be comfortable. I need something that is waterproof and VERY durable. I would also like to stay under $400. What do you guys wear outdoors in cold weather? |

My waterproof shell is not insulated at all. That way it can be used in warmer weather as well. You will be much better off with a thin breathable water proof shell and warming layers underneath. I use the German military Gortex bibs and over coat for my outer shell. I think the set new was around $50.00. These are available from sportsmans guide. This is a big purchase of core gear, you don't want to scrimp. $400.00 should be plenty though. |

I'm currently using a TAD Gear Stealth hoodie as my waterproof layer; it has no insulation so when the temperature drops I have to layer. Only complaint I've had is that it pisses all over my pants when it rains; got some waterproof overpants to deal with that. -REad |

For me durable means going straight through briars and barb wire or staying dry in rain in 50mph plus winds AKA riding in an open bass boat in a down pour. I have used Columbia Shells for the last 15 years in hunting or fishing, year round. I buy coats that include a second layer. The second layer is usually too hot if you are active but good for low intensity work near zero, or riding a snowmobile or ATV near zero degrees. Buy itself the second layer is a good jacket in itself. If you are active, it is best to use more layers without the liner. The key is the shell needs to hit you mid thigh when you wear it. The zipper must have an external storm flap over it, wrists that can be snapped tight, good collar up to your chin and a detachable hood. A jacket that fits you well with a second layer will also fit you when you wear it over layers of your choosing. For waterproof the weak spots are: neck, wrists, waist, ankles, all zippers. Large up turned collar, wear a wide brimmed hat like a Tilley or booney. Wear gloves that are long enough to go under the wrist of the jacket beyond snap point. You need rain proof pants, if you are sitting or riding in wet or cold, you really need bibs. The more overlap you have between jacket and pants/bibs the better off you are. Then all this water ends up in your shoes if boots are not up under pants and waterproof. Jacket should have a waist cord/band you can tighten to reduce cold air flowing in when seated. My columbia has vents in the arm pits which can be unzipped to vent when hot in cold weather or out in warm weather rain. They go from elbow to ribs. What works in wind and rain also works in snow. Getting your lower back packed with snow is a bitch. Al the snaps, flaps and vents can be used to keep you warm or keep you cool. I have used combos like this since 1974 when I lived in North Dakota and wanted more mobility then a one piece snowmobile suit gave me. Like KyBob said, don't go cheap. Stuff will work when you need it and last 10 years or more. Your first form of shelter are the clothes on your back. $400 gets you jacket, pants, good hat, neck gaitor and gloves. |

I like REI. a few years ago i went during a sale and used my dividend to get a $300 Mountain Hardware shell in OD/black. I agree with the above. this is an important core gear choice. buy quality. Mountain Hardware doesnt use Gore brand membrane i believe theirs seems to be just as good if not a little better. mine has been to south america, africa, AFG, and on many sections of the AT in the fall. used in conjuction with a Patagonia R1 fleece the only thing i have warmer is an old N2-B parka. Brands I can confidently Recommend: North Face mountain Hardware Marmot Columbia titanium Propper (one fo their ECWCS parkas in tan or green is a top flight choice for a mere $150) |

I like my German surplus Gore tex suit too. It came to about $50 shipped and was like new. Its as tough as any gore tex shell is going to be and was pretty cheap. If you do not want a camo print maybe try US cav for a GI type shell in OD or black. Also you could try Galls. Ghilly |
