Forgive me, but a search turns up nothing. I've been looking for a new winter coat for this season as the white death is already starting to fall from the sky (yeah, a bit late). I have a few Filson products I'm very happy with, such as their belts, hats, and wallets and while they are reasonably priced I decided to check out some of their jackets and liners. Dear God, they're other gear is spendy. I've never seen their clothing and outwear in person, but it looks like it would wear like cardboard. 250+ dollars for the coat, and another 150+ for the liner? Is it the name, or is their stuff really that good? |

I have a Filson Upland Hunting Jacket that I bought about ten years ago. a few things about it, I don't think a fire hose could get water passed it, very warm, stiff to wear at first but wears in very well after time, lifetime warranty if I remember correctly, but the thing is tough as nails to start with, and very well made. It is one of those products that will last you a lifetime. I'm sure my son will be wearing mine after I'm gone. I would advise trying them on before buying one however. I found that the different models felt very different on me. If you have a Bass Pro Shop or Cabelas in the area, you can try some different ones on before ordering one from someplace cheaper.

Merk Unfortunately that's the problem, both the Cabela's and Bass Pro that are over an hour and a half away (I used to live closer) has an utterly dismal selection of Filson gear. Their tin cloth pants seemed alright, though. I'm specifically looking at their Tin Cloth Pacaker Coat and an appropriate liner to go with it. The Tin Cloth Field Jacket looks alright, but I prefer the 3/4 length. Anyone have either of these? Like I said before, seems pricery and I am cheap ... but I don't have a problem with buy once, cry once, either. Hell, if I added up how fast I go through these cheaper parkas, I'd save money if this would last more than 5 years. |

The price is dear, but ten years from now when you are still wearing it and it still works as good (or maybe better) than the first day you put it on, you will think yourself wise for paying once and being done with it.
I live in Montana and wear Filson all winter. I have a wool vest, a wool jacket liner and a tin cloth shell, for when it is wet. Most of the time the wool is all you need. Buying Filson is like buying a Colt. You're kinda done after you just break down and do it. |

| I buy jackets that last..... I hunt in Filson clothing and they stand up to anything! Try crawling through bushes with thorns on them while wearing a gor-tex jacket...... it won't stand a chance. The Filson gear will last you a life time. I stopped buying 'fad' type clothing since they don't last as long. Stick to tried and true clothing. |

Bass Pro Shop no longer carries Filson. There is a saying "That man is so old he is on his second pair of Filsons". It's pretty true. My old roomate picked up a pair of their tin cloth bibs when he was a freshman in college. Eight pheasant season later he is still using it. The hems are frayed and there is a rip from a barb wire fence. Got the rip patched up and they still look and work just fine.
Look on ebay for a used pair. They are still expensive but much less than retail. And most people don't use Filson gear that hard. |
