Ok so its not zombies at the front door, but a very important topic. I replaced all the smoke detectors in the house. Added a couple of extra fire extinguishers and bought a two story emergency ladder.( It is rolled up and in the event of a fire you hang it on the bottom of a open window, and unfurl it) I also had the wife and kids sit down and we devised a fire escape plan, what to do in the event and where to go. Has anybody else made similar preps?

Most plans go out the window in case of a fire.

Get it!

Trust me the " Plan" is pretty much  GET THE FUCK OUT OF THE HOUSE .  I want my two kids, both under eleven to understand that they do not need to save anything. But to get out as quickly and safely as we can.

Just did the same thing.  Extra extinguishers, escape ladder under the bed, fire plan.

Kids know to get out of the house - PERIOD.  Forget the precious hamsters, the dog, etc.  They know how to open their window and get out on the roof if they can't get out the front door.

Rally point is the basketball court across the street.  Not just the court but the pole closest to the street.  They are to hang on to the pole and not let go.  This is what they've been taught if they ever get lost.  Grab the closest solid thing (park bench, tree, mail box, light pole, etc.).  Keeps them from wondering around making the situation potentially worse.

We also have a huge fire-resistant safe.  We keep the irreplaceable stuff in there (it's not just for guns).  We've actually put a fire-resistant file box inside the safe for cash, paperwork, memory stick with pictures of every room, closet, nook and cranny of the house.

As TJ says, prepare for the most likely events first.  We have house fire covered.  Now it's on to the next thing (earth quakes around here).

Ditto on what everybody has said. I would also highly recommend a CO detector, those things can save your life. A former ARFCOM member AntiUSSA aka Tim Green almost "bought the farm" because a bird built a nest on their water heater exhaust pipe, him and his wife barely escaped with their lives

Since a couple of you guys mentioned smoke detectors,  one by one I'm replacing my smoke detectors with dual sesnor (photo and ion).  I'm also working on installing a dual sensor smoke detectors in my attic space and garage but will have the audible close to our bedrooms.  In that case we can get out of the house before the fire becomes a raging inferno in either location.

We already have three CO detectors thoughout the house.

That reminds me of a fire we had a few months ago. It was a double wide that caught on fire under the trailer. It burned for quite awhile before anyone noticed it. A smoke detector in an attic or crawlspace is a wise idea!

I have three fire extinguishers (ABC) type and one pressurized water can.  I also have smoke detectors and a CO detector.
