Been on ARFCOM a while, Is shoot IDPA, & I'm an SO.
Never really read the outdoors & survival section much because I'm on Hemodialysis & just figured I'd be dead in a week should it HTF in NJ. (only 3 Bridges leaving the state) But after reading some of the posts I come to realize that I could at least help out family & friends even after I'm gone. Never Prept before ,Think of this post as an empty glass of water to be filled with knowledge, real world knowledge please, I've no money for a full up generator or camper. So what should I do first? |

... So what should I do first? Read, read, read. Fill up a couple of jugs of water and put 'em in the basement. Buy two cans of corn instead of one next time you're at the store. You're off... ETA: oh yeah, almost forgot. A brick of .22 LR hollow points. |

Hope this gives you some ideas of things to get ready for.
Welcome to the SF
Do you have a plan for; fire? severe weather? pregnancy? job loss? vehicle loss? Making a plan will only cost the time and paper to write it on. A plan will enable you to organize your actions and purchases in the future Quoted:
Prepare for the most likely first and the least likely last. So you ask; what is the most likely event? Quoted:
Start by thinking back over the last 20 years of your life and what emergencies you faced. Things like: flood loss of employment fire tornado blizzard loss of electricity car died out on the road (happened to me tonight 15 miles out of town - 15 degrees and very windy out) etc. these are things that will probably happen again. take steps to deal with those problems first. SF History—has been posted in SF since I joined the SF: 3 SF members that are recovering from job loss homes lost to fire posted here in SF 5 or more BOVs totaled by accident 5 now 7 now probably more new little SFers born 1 SF family has suffered the loss of a child to illness. Visits to the ER due to infection, injury, and insect sting allergy 5 or more hurricanes 1 SFer had to stay a week in the hospital How should you live your life now that you are a survivalist? Quoted:
Live like "it" will never happen, prep like "it" will. Who’s who of the SF (please forgive me if I don’t spell all the names perfectly) Frank Squid—posts occasionally one of the founders or the founder of SF TomJefferson(TJ)—top moderator of SF and poster SF family. TJ is a great source of wisdom and stories. Paul—suburban SFing and expedition offroading. Halffast—author of some well known fiction Feral—homesteading or farming. frozenny—financial survival. Protus—apartment survivalism and outdoor skills die-tryin(dt or DT)—poster BOV of SF Ops—lived SF for decades, poster SF family 1bigbunker—builds houses Ferfal308—he’s living through a collapse in another country biere—general knowledge donne3—mom to a bunch of SFers CJan_NH—generator use and the poster AR15 spare parts kit Wolfcri—has some good welding skills Skibane—knows something about EMP and flashlights shibumiseeker—modern homesteading, off grid living, and BOVs There are others, but I have not caught the above posters posting trash or foolishness. |

in this fourm.....there are a few read me threads....strongly recommend them.....it will kinda give you a place to start... what does Hemodialysis involve equipment and expendiable wise? It would take too long to explain it here but I will break it down into its major component. Pure Water source/ reverse osmosis Electrical source/ to run the machine Saline/Hepa~Filter/ Heparin : to thin & filter the blood. Lots of sterile components: Gloves, gauze, syringes, masks, betadine, Alc. 91% etc..... I could do it at home if the need arose but it would need to be set up by a Bio-Tech. |

I did go to welding school in 2006.
It turned out to be the best 10 months of my life since becoming disabled, & I'm still friends with a lot of those guys after graduation. If ever I wanted someone on my (6) it would be this crew, real straight shooting bunch. I miss it |

Welcome!
You may consider the option of sheltering in place or Bug-in. Prepare for the most likely threat first. Shelter, water, food. Don't forget to live (enjoy life). The others will be along shortly. "Bug In" would be the way to go, I live far enough from the coast that a flood is unlikely & in an urban setting away from the Pine Barrens I can't see a Forrest fire. The issue that comes to mind (Epic Failure) of the power grid, we've had several outages over the summer that lasted 2 Hrs at most. With the NJ budget at 10.5 Billion for 2011 & a failing infrastructure this IMO will be the first to go. I do not see water being an is in a state surrounded by water, the aquifer seems to be in good shape but w/o the Grid to pump it, Well we know how that works. |

I am a bio-tech who sets up dialysis "units" on cruise ships. The need for heparin and lots of power and water would be the major limiting factors. I know the dialysis machines we use draw almost 20 amps. Add in the RO's and you need a pretty good generator. Not impossible to do. Right after the Haiti quake we shipped 10 pallets of dialysis equipment down but I am not sure how they set them all up. Home dialysis is not that hard really. I am not sure if Fresenius has some type of assistance but if you could get set up at home they train someone to run you and you could stash extra supplies away? For short term SHTF you need to get some Kayexalate, Kionex , Marlexate? This works for a short period of time. A weekend? Makes ya poop alot or somethng. Consult a Doctor!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
