I realize the ideal fuel cans for storage are the scepter ones or the nato steel jerry cans, but is there anything wrong with the eight dollar red ones you can buy at wal*mart? I just don't have the money to spend on the $40+ dollar scepter ones on ebay and other sites. I was thinking about buying a few and filling just for SHTF but if there is somrthing bad about them I guess I will stay way. Thanks for any info |

The Walmart fuel cans are made to refuel lawnmowers. The nozzle on the new cans is not easy to use when filling an auto. The closure system on some civilian market cans are made to vent the vapors; this will allow air in the can, and water will get into your gas by condensing out of the air.
OK so you are––I won't say broke––you have a fully committed budget. You already have a good quality cas can paid for if you have a car. Fill the car often. Every day on the way home from work just stop by a convenient good quality gas station and pump in whatever you burned that day. This will not change your gas budget because you will not be driving anywhere new. You will always have a full tank ready. You can find cans at yard sales and flea markets, so stash some money for when you find a really good can for sale at a bargain. |

I found all of mine except 4 on craigslist at much lower prices than "can ban" vendor prices." They're out there, just be ready to make the call when they come up. CARB cans like PA mentioned are terrible and waste and spill more gas than anything and they are unsafe. |

Quoted: Thanks for the info guys, and I was thinking about buying some of those tonight! You saved me IMO I like the metal NATO cans better. The Scepter MFC's have this cap strap/gasket configuration that can cause you to lose the gasket if the straps break off. The plactic MFC's are lighter but will break down under UV exposure (see some coming back from the sandbox for example.) The NATO cans are subject to rust and are heavier, but they are built like a brick s*** house. I think either will work for you but it may boil down to what you can find! |

| Now I have three red cans from Wally world and I put non ethanol gas in them with stabil and they swelled. What the heck? I open the pour valve and it vents the built up pressure. What's going on? I can't keep them more than 3 months without this happening. I'm in Iowa and hey just sit in my garage. |

Anyone have any of these for fuel? They appear to be water cans.... http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/ZAA055-1.html |
| I have ordered form this place I know there not pre-ban but the price came out to $50 a piece with shipping and it only took 2 weeks to get them not bad fro new NATO cans |

I own 16 of the red plastic 5 gal gas cans. I rotate the gas out of one each month (sometimes two a month) with a super siphon. They are inspected each month when they are drained and refilled with treated gas. They are stored in the barn. I started buying them in 2005 and added gas stocks when I could afford it. It took about four years to get up to 16 filled/treated. We have 4 MT spares to rotate in if there is a leak. I'll go steel someday, probably one or two at a time when I can get them for cheap. But today, we have 80 gallons for the vehicles, lanterns, and the generator.
