So the powers out, the cities are burning, the asteroid hit, the FEMA camps are full, zombies walk the earth, and the U.N. has a check point on every corner manned with clones of Obama. But your safe! Wherever you have ended up, be it at home or a bug out location, your good to go. You have all the food and water you could possibly have, your location is secure, your family is safe, all the guns are clean, the crops are planted, the generator just had an oil change, all the chores are done, and now your faced with boredom. What will you do? Read a book, paint a picture, play a bored game? Capture squirrels and teach them to be your evil minions? Work out?
I ask because I truly believe sitting around and doing nothing is unhealthy in many ways. I do keep a few things around to amuse me, but what's your plan? |

I'm going to go out on a limb and assume by these two statements you've never lived on a farm, farmstead, homestead etc... cause the chores are never ever ever ever all done... |

I just spent 3 hours weeding the area's between the beds, because I haven't had time to mulch them. I have a few raised beds that still need dirt in them before I can plant them. Haven't had time to go get dirt and compost. I should have had those beds full of tomatoes a week ago, the toms I started indoors are now over a foot tall, but I haven't been able to get them in, because I haven't had time. I need to get berry bushes in the ground, but they are in 5 gallons right now because I haven't had time. The pool yard looks like a jungle, I wanted to get a container garden going out there for herbs so they would be closer to the house, haven't had time. THERE IS NEVER ENOUGH TIME!!!! And I only do this shit for fun. I can only imagine what would need to be done if I was on more than 5 acres and had to do this for a living. ETA: still need to get the hog fence finished, the cow ate the solar electric fencing during a storm, need to fix that. Need to get more gravel put down between the driveway and the feed beds for the chickens. Speaking of chickens, I still need to get their new yard going, if I am going to get more layers, I need to expand their yard. Might raise the fencing around the orchard and let them go in there. Need to get the brooder done so I can get this years chicks, the puppy ate the old one. The big garden needs to be mulched again, there are weeds coming up between the broccoli and cabbage plants. Need to figure why the spinach hasn't changed size in the last month. Ad infinetum. |

So am I to be given the impression that you guys think there will be absolutely zero free time if things go down hill for an extended length of time? |

We are prepping for weather related or natural disaster type scenarios. We have several board games, but they get old pretty fast. We play cards a lot: Rummy, poker, spoons, old maid, Kings in the corner, tonk, etc. I have some cousins that keep promising to teach me clabber; we only see them at funerals now. I have a lot of books on our book shelf. We play Yahtzee, too. We have a bunch of movies on DVD and VHS. We have a scrabble game, but never play it.

I'm not saying there will be zero free time, but I highly doubt boredom will be a problem, at least not at my homestead. |

My question to you is, what do you do to prevent boredom now? |

My question to you is, what do you do to prevent boredom now? Well oddly enough a lot of what I do for fun gets confused for work. I work on machines at work and then go home and.... work on more machines! On my own time I'll replace a bearing in your grain elevator, put new brushes in your DC motor, put a water pump in your well, change the tires on your tractor, fix your car and so on. For people I know I don't charge much if anything, except maybe dinner. I have traded my time as a welder or mechanic for someone else's time as a tow truck driver or lawyer or something along those lines, but mostly just for fun. If I'm not doing that then hiking, shooting, playing with the dog, or hanging out with the family. |

What I was getting at was, the things me and the wife do to prevent boredom now, we will still probably be able to do even in your scenario. If our entertainment revolved around the mall, maybe not so much. We live out in the country on 10 acs., which is not really a lot of land, but I know there are ALWAYS things that need to be done around here. (I just save a lot of time now by not doing them Oh, and if you get really bored, come on down here, I could probably find stuff for you to do. (You sound handy) |
