See if you can see it hooked up to a tractor and running. Use something to test it to see if it's producing power. Doesn't seem like a bad price if it's not too old and working. Sometimes these are stored outside so they might have a lot of weather wear. |

I have a tractor and understand thats it's pto driven, I am not sure what hp is required and am checking on my tractor specs now. |

To pruduce full power you are going to need 24-25 horse power at the pto. Figure a 28-30 horse tractor. You can use a smaller tractor, but you will not be able to draw full power from the generator. I would not try to use anything under a 20 horse tractor for this generator at any load.
If it is working, that is a great price. |

My tractor is 29hp and it has 21hp at the pto. So I guess it's border line enough? What will happen if the pto hp is not enough, Tractor damage or low generator output? Lower generator output usually. You can run it on a lower horse powered tractor, but you can not draw the full rated wattage from the generator. Usually with a diesel tractor, you will get lower voltage output first, which will shorten the life of any electric motors if they do not stall. Get a multi meter and check your current draw at full voltage. Add things, and watch the voltage drop. Edited to add, during world war II, Germany lowered the line voltage in an effort to save production costs. Many of the large industrial motors were damaged due to the lowered voltage. Lowering the voltage to an incandesant light will extend life, and save energy (while producing less light). Lowering voltage to a motor will cause more current to be needed to do the same job. This can overheat and damage motors. |

$500 is real cheap for a PTO generator of that wattage. I wouldn't expect much of a unit. I agree, but it was just a head on a old truck frame trailer with two bald tires from the fifties and a fuse box out of a fourties house mounted on it. No marking on the head at all to verify what it was so.............. Thanks for the help though |
