Tonight I discovered that the Kenwood TH-F6A will receive HF. No idea. I bought it (expensive, mind you) for the tri-band ability, but ever time I look at the manual, I discover that it does something else. I like this little radio.
I also discovered that the Baofeng UV-5RAX+ I got off Amazon for cheap will RX and TX on GMRS. I also discovered that the programming cable for the Kenwood works for the Baofeng and CHIRP functioned perfectly. That is all. |

They have been making that TH-F6 for YEARS and I still say it is probably the best, plain ole' FM, HT rig out there.
In other words it doesn't do digital voice, it doesn't to APRS................. but if you just want a plain old FM HT, it is one of the best, if not THE best out there. FWIW: I just gave mine away a couple weeks ago along with some nice accessories. I had owned it for a long time. I never used it any more and a local guy needed an HT. I am into APRS and bought the TH-D72 and most of my TH-F6 accessories work with the '72 other than the batteries and chargers and all that. And, I am getting ready to buy the new Yeasu Fusion HT at Dayton, and I have several other HTs, so I gave it a home where it would get used. |
| The th-f6a was my first radio. That is a whole bunch of radio in a little package. The audio is outstanding in my opinion but I haven't directly compared it to a lot of other brands. Unfortunately I use a ht very seldom and it is basically a shelf sitter. It'll probably be in EE in the next few weeks. |

Mine has a setting for the mic/speaker input: mic/spkr, pc and tnc. I think it will do APRS. |
| I just bought a TH-F6 last week. Love it - my first "real" HT (had a Baofeng). It's also my only 220 radio, and I really like being able to receive HF in a small package (needs a different antenna, though, unless you're really close). I hooked it up to my 40m dipole and it was doing a decent job... not an in-depth test / comparison by any means (yet). |

Mine has a setting for the mic/speaker input: mic/spkr, pc and tnc. I think it will do APRS. Right, it will do APRS but you have to have additional hardware to do it. I was referring to something like the TH-D72 that has a built in GPS and built in TNC that does APRS inside the box. But, sure, if you connect cables to your mic and speaker and add a TNC, GPS, and a PC of some type (or a cell phone) it will definitely do APRS. For that matter, if you feed the audio into a PC you could receive and decode all kinds of digital modes on HF/VHF/UHF since it not only receives HF but it also has the various HF modes. AM broadcast reception: it has a built in ferrite bar antenna, so it works great on broadcast AM |

Mine also has HF/SW/AM. No SSB. Yeasu VX-5. (They call it" extended receive")
Usually you need to attach a long wire to make HF/SW. In the city with a stock antenna it's almost deaf. Out in the woods with no electrical noise and a long wire (30'+) and it comes alive. |
