So I bought an Asus EEE laptop that is part of my emcomm box (more details to follow once I finish the project) and am looking for software to load on it. My thoughts are to have all the ham radio software that I would need. So far I have the following:
Google earth
Beacon Time Wizard
Skype
Echolink
SeaTTY
Skywave Analysis
Beacon Tracker
W6ELProp

I have a signalink, so digicom stuff would be cool too.

Anyone have anything to add?

That thing runs Linux, right?

They are two versions, sorry I should have clarified. I orignally bought the Linux version, only to find that I have no patience messing with programming and the quirks of Linux (XP is bad enough). The linux laptop sits on my reloading table where I use the wifi radio internet for music.
The laptop that is going in the emcomm box is XP.

I use MixW and EasyPal among others. I think MixW is worth the coin but YMMV.

Get a USB to serial adapter, and install HRD. It will give you full computer control depending on your emcomm hf rig.

This! It has to be the best ham software package ever, and its free.

Yup. After you load this you will hardly if ever touch all that other stuff you loaded.

I hear you on the Linux thing. I have a mythtv/linux PVR setup.

ham radio deluxe. I've got an eee-pc 1000-HA, and it runs great. And that's on top of truecrypt encryption. A laptop this small is easy to swipe.

Do any of the flash netbooks run XP or only Linux? I'm thinking about taking a PSK-20 and netbook on the AT in Sept so I can digital from the trail. I don't want to risk hard drive damage in the pack, though, so I think I'd be better off going with a flash-based one.

You can get an Asus EEE in XP or LInux. Depends on what your flavor you prefer. I have a friend hiking the AT right now...I don't know if you would want to carry all that weight on the trail, but whatever works for you.

Are you sure? When I bought mine, the solid state was linux only.

Yeah, it'll depend on what my final pack weight comes to. I'm thinking I can power the radio with some AAs which won't add a lot of weight. We'll have to see. This is all theory right now.

Looks like he's right.

The Eee PC™ 701SD comes in both Microsoft Windows® and GNU Linux versions.

Looks like it weighs in right at 2 lbs. We'll have to see.
