What about the IC7100?
It seems to have everything you seek and is going for about $1000 new And giga parts has them a few $ cheaper at $979 as does HRO Sorry to hear about your truck and gear, that really, really sucks. |

Hopefully you can find another 7000. Otherwise the list gets pretty short, 7100, 857, or go with dual rigs and get a TS-480 + dual band FM of your choosing. Yup The TS-2000 is an ok rig all round but isn't great at weak signal or being portable. Soon I will test out the IC7100 and will be able to report my opinions. If you don't mind how did the fire start? |

FM radio is NOT an option for VHF/UHF. The choice looks like it comes down to the IC-7100 or Yaesu FT-991 for a new radio. It it hard for me to spend as much as a new 7100 for a used 7000. Has anyone worked with both of these radios and can give me a comparison. VHF/UHF is the most important part. |

I have been very happy with the reception on my Icom rigs. Less so with Yaesu. The 7100 and 991 both have good points. I am a little concerned that I won't be as happy with reception on the 991. Other features look very nice. One piece with built-in tuner. Price of the 7100 with LDG IT-100 and the 911 is so close that it is insignificant. $1155 compared to $1200. Not really considering a used 7k unless it is cheap. Most of them are selling as high as a new 7100 and I would still need to buy the IT-100 for either one so might as well have a new rig with a new warranty. I'm pissed that Icom didn't include 2m and 70cm in the 7300. That would have made the choice easy. |

I am having more trouble finding people who have used the FT-991 than the IC-7100. Gamma762 used one for Winter Field Day and liked it. I am leaning toward the 991 since it will be one piece with the tuner built in. The 3 pieces are a drawback for the way I will be using it. 7100 negatives: 3 pieces for the radio and tuner. Low SSB power in some units. May be fixed by a firmware update in Jan 2016. 991: Receive sensitivity and filters. Are they as good as the 7100? How good is the built=in tuner? 991 looks good with the spectrum scope and all in one box. The other option I considered was Elecraft transverters with one of my other HF rigs. The drawback on this is for portable and rover use. This would probably have the best VHF/UHF performance. I still have the Microwave Modules 2 meter transverter than I used with the TS-430S. I would like to hear about any experience with the 991. |

Quoted: A little too much amplifier there? 1500 watts wasn't enough for you? You people are no help. I ask for help picking a new radio and all you do is make comments about the fire. The more research I do it seems that the 991 is winning. I realize that the built-in tuner won't have the range that the LDG IT-100 does but I have several manual tuners that can be used if I need more range. They will also handle antennas with balanced leads. The 7100 would probably win if I was mounting it in the new truck. For portable and CW it looks like the 991 may be nicer. Looking at the ARRL tests on both of them the 991 meets or exceeds the 7100 on most categories. Lesson learned. Don't ask arfham for help. |

When KM says "VHF/UHF rover" he's not talking about FM.
The 991 seemed like a sweet radio at winter field day. I am curious to see how it will do during regular field day HF conditions. I might be able to borrow it for some VHF/UHF testing, but without a contest handy it would be hard to drum up much if any activity. One knock on the 991 for VHF/UHF work is the one "dual band" antenna connector for 2m and 70cm, but the 7000 and 7100 are both set up the same way so you're already used to that. It is an SO-239 type. |

A new Ic7100 is probably your best choice if you want new. Having a detachable front face is a must for mobile ops.
I'm very picky about RX audio and RX performance and would not have anything but Yeasu rigs as base radios at the shack. IMHO, Icom 7000, 7100 or 706 mk2 have the best noise blankers performance. Its very important for mobile rigs. I myself use an Icom7000 as a mobile rig but have used both IC706 and Ft857 in the past. Ic706 did great but it lacked DSP. FT 857 had a significantly better performance on VHF/UHF bands (especially with RX on 6 meters) but its noise blanker threshold was lower than the Icoms. Sorry to hear about the fire. You did have fuses on both positive and negative wires going to the radio, right? My next door neighbor had an interior fire in his Chevy Lumina. I could not believe how fast it was spreading inside the car. I just happened to see some smoke when I was walking towards my house. Large flames were visible 10 seconds later. I grabbed my fire extinguisher and ran 100 yards toward the car. Half of the interior was gone by the time I got there. I was surprised I could put the fire with a single fire extinguisher. It was a A,B,C type from Costco. They had no fire extinguishers in their house nor in the car. They got lucky. The car was right in front of the house. The car was a total loss but they did not loose the house. I think he was installing a new radio when this happened. I asked him why he did not pour water over the source when the fire started. His answer was, Electricity and water don't mix....... |

Personally I like DEMI (Downeast microwave) transverters. So with that in mind there are a few ways to get to where you want to be even something a simple as a Flex-1500 and a Laptop to drive the transverters A seriously impractical concept for portable/rover V/UHF operation, and would be more expensive by an order of magnitude. |

Actually look at These Transverters I had one before and sold it the guy I sold it to told him it worked as well as his DEMI did. |
