How many of you keep squirrel or rabbit pelts and what do you do with them? Just curious.

I don't keep them; I have no use for them. One of these days I'm gonna keep a squirrel and have it mounted for a wall mount on a branch or something. My son also wants a jackrabbit head on his wall; maybe I'll make it into a jackalope.

My wife wanted me to start keeping my rabbit pelts, so she can make a blanket out of them.



The only problem is I have no idea how to preserve them, so this may or may not be a tag.

Easy - once you skin them out, flesh the pelts out then freeze them in a plastic bag. Check out USA Foxx and download their catalog. It will tell you how many pelts and how much $$ you need to send to get your rabbit coat / hat / gloves / lingerie made.

I woud also like to know what fleshing out means. Im not shooting too many critters but what I do shoot I eat and have been throwing away the hides, it would start to add up after a while if I could save them.

First you'll need to be able to stretch the hide tight - there are plenty of ways to do this, so use your imagination. I like to pin the corners to a piece of plywood and then use my fleshing knife to scrape any remaining meat off. I use the Magnum Ulu from Knives of Alaska - I like the Ulu style scrapers. Any knife with a broad edge will work, though. You don't really want a razor cutting edge on it, though, because you don't want to cut the hide by accident. Once it's fleshed, I roll it back up and it goes back in the freezer. Some guys salt it, but I don't do my own tanning so I let the tannery worry about all that.
