Anyone got one of these or know of a place where I can getan "Idiot's Guide" for setting it up?  I'm having a bit of trouble understanding it.

I picked one up really cheap recently and went about trying to set it up.  Problem number 1 is that Windows 7 does not come with hyperterminal anymore.  Got that solved, reset the jumpers, and got my callsign in it.  Got it recieving packets and sending them to my computer, but found out I had the wrong cable for my TM-V71a.  Tried to make my own cable but found out the 6-pin mini din cable I had was 1 wire short

Ok, got the new cable ordered.  But even though I was recieving packets, the led lights weren't lighting up on the front.  Maybe that was a cable problem?  I have the right PC to TNC cable, and APRSISCE was decoding APRS traffic on .39, but I screwed it up and am too tired to mess with it more tonight.

Other than that, I am completely lost.  I can't figure out how to change the baud rate back to 9600 (on the PC comm side), it reverted to 1200 when I hard reset it.  I would also like to run it as a digi/igate combo and a stand-alone digi, but can't figure out the terminal settings to do that.  I would also like to do "regular" packet work at some point, but again I'm confused with the terminal programming.  Terminal was a bit before my time, and I'm no IT whiz

I know a few of you are into packet and TNCs, so I'd appreciate any help y'all could give me on getting this thing set up.

Thanks

baud rate info is on pg 36/37 in the manual. Manual is available at kantronics.com. I would copy/paste info here except I'm on an older tablet. If I misunderstood your question, my apologies. It's late

I want to buy a KPC3+ and have been reading the manual on-line.  It is right HERE

This is just a tag, hoping for some words of wisdom that I can utilize when I buy my KPC3+.

Where did you buy the cable ?

Thanks.  I've read through the manual and it starts off nice and slow for retards like me (open this, click this, put this cable here, etc.) and then just jumps into "here are 10,000 text commands, oh and don't forget to change the baud rate and do a bunch of other shit, good luck"

I ordered the cable from BuxComm, this is the one I ordered for the TM-V71a.

I'm running the exact setup.  I ordered this cable:

1 x KVKW45 Kantronics KPC and KAM KAM 98 etc to Kenwood radios with RJ45
modular Mic I O 6 FT- (KVKW45)  = $21.95

from packetradio.com

It installed and ran perfectly right off the bat.  The manual can be downloaded form Kantronics website for free.

Just make sure that the cable has the pigtail for the external speaker hookup and you're good to go.

Just FYI for everyone else.  I found this which is what I was looking for, at least for the stand-alone digipeater portion.  I'll have to give it a try when my cable comes in.

Still looking for any other tips & tricks y'all may want to share.  Also, mine is the version 9.1 firmware.

That's the spirit!  Enough of this and we can have our own ArfPRS frequency.  How about 145.87?  I know that is in the OSCAR band plan but... if we got our own satellite...

Please ham world, stop trying to use or hack hyperterminal for TNC use.

Putty is what you seek.

Putty Download Link

IM me for setup guidance after your cable comes in. In addition to the Buxcomm cable, I have found THIS cable for interfacing your PC to the TNC. I use either the serial add-on card or a USB to serial cable with a FTDI chipset.

You can also paste your config here for us to critique...

Yeah, Putty is how I finally "fixed" the issue.  Forgot to add the link, thanks!  (I like resolving problems for posterity and Google's sake)

Thanks for the offer.  I'll take you up on that.  Let me know how to "copy & paste" my settings and I'll do that.  Or, if you can let me know what works for you that may be better if I start there and ask questions if I have any problems.  But, of course, I've still got to figure out what the settings do.

I had the opportunity to buy this thing I have wanted for a while LNIB for $30 and jumped on it knowing it would be a project.  I want to start out by setting up just a digipeater and mapping on my computer so that I can use my HT and Mobilinkd setup to map my range from HT to base station (on a remote 445 frequency).  I would like to be able to set it up to digipeat (with a longer delay), but also map it on APRSISCE so that I can know real time I'm making it in but still make my own map and not clog up the regular frequency.

Eventually, I'd like to set up a digipeater (and maybe igate) so that I can take this thing mobile to remote locations and set up a digi where there is no coverage.  I'm going up to Greers Ferry Lake in AR in a couple of weeks and that is a great example of a good place for that.  I have a spot high on a hill overlooking the lake and a landing that may come in handy for some folks over a holiday.

Connect to the TNC using putty

Next type "command" so the TNC will interpret all entries as a command to process.

Next type "display" to list all current parameters.

Copy and paste.

Will do when I can get this thing in front of me.  Pretty much everything is going to be stock as I hard reset it the other night.

Also, while I'm thinking about it: I'm going to want to increase the delay for digipeating so I can hear the return on my Baofeng and Mobilinkd.  The delay on that radio is a bit long to hear the digipeat of my own signal from the digis here in town.

I used to do this sort of thing with my PK-232. All I had to do was have the box in command mode and 'load' the file of commands. It worked like a champ.  73, Rob

I promise I will get back to answer the questions above. Currently juggling the honey-do list, preparing for new floors, and waiting on the cable guy. Currently have no internets at the house and a proper response will require my desktop.

Now I remember why I took my packet system offline.
