Anyone know if these lanterns from Academy are any good, and is there a fuel source where you can get the fuel by the Gal.?

Its decent.  Price is about right.

It'll burn normal kerosene or lamp oil with no issue.

It appears to be one of the Deitz #30 style and may be even made by them for Academy.

Might not be as bright as some of the bigger ones, but plenty to get you through a few hours of dark.  As always, buy two.  One is never enough.  (and spare wicks)

I know that these lanterns are cheap.... But I tell you buy a lantern or lanterns, that is a bit more in price ( $50,00) and you won't be sorry.
Get a lantern that is rechargeable and or runs on D cells. You will be more happy. If you think (and its all a guess) that the SHTF will last less  than a few months,
Get a kero lamp and many gallons  to make your way thru the bad times. I have a battery lantern light and a generator to recharge it. I also have a kero and about 5 gallons of white kero for a backup for light. (This is my plan).
You need to have a light backup plan ( for night) and another for backup incase one fails. This is a cheap ( $50) thing that will pay off in spades if needed.
If you are here in this fourm then you are a concerned person (for your family)) and want the best for you and your family, get a kero and a battery lantern (IMHO). Its a cheap piece of mind.

In a SHTF situation kerosene or any other fuel would be best used for cooking or heating or running a genny, not for lighting.  For lighting you can use batteries, which nowadays have a long shelf life.  An LED lantern can run for 100 or more hours on 4 D cells.  It wouldn't be hard to get 100 hours of battery life to last a month of use.  If SHTF outlasts your battery supply you can bet your kerosene supply is gone too.

I was thinking something cheap that will work for now. I know the saying pay once cry once, but I'm trying to cover all the basis, or at least as many as I can in a small part now. This way if something was to go and happen now or in the near future, at least we would a few of the main areas covered.

I'm trying to stretch my funds out to cover all the areas as much as possible now, so that later I can add to or make adjustments as needed. ( and still keep the wife somewhat onboard )

I thought at this price, ( if they worked halfway decent ) because we don't have a gen. we would at least have a few lanterns for lighting. As far as fuel for cooking, I have a Metric 100 Ton's of Mesquite for fuel on my place and access to more if need be.

I have a couple of bottle propane lanterns and a few extra fuel bottles on hand, just added 4 more today, but I know these wouldn't last long at all, so that's why I was wondering about these lanterns.

And thanks for all the input, even if it's advice I can't use now, I save the idea for future use, so it's all appreciated.
