I planted spinach, broccoli, romaine lettuce (12 plants), buttercrunch lettuce (6 plants), onions, and kale in may raised bed ~ 6 weeks ago. One by one, I'm losing my romain plants. One day they are fine, and within 24 hours the leaves shrivel from the outermost inward, and die. Sometime 2 or 3 small leaves in the middle will hang on for a couple of days. Nothing else has been affected. Any ideas what can cause this? I used google and it seems some problems are caused by over watering, which I am fairly confident that I am not doing.
I'm in West Central GA if that helps. The plants have been doing this in all weather- including now (highs 70s/lows 50s) and about 2 weeks after planting (Highs 40s/ lows 20s-30s) and all temps in between.

Did you start them from seeds or buy plants?
If you bought plants then they could have a disease.
Or it could be root rot. Got any pics?

I bought the plants.

Root rot- I'll pull the sickly looking plant tonight and take a look- and post pics. The weird thing is this is happening one at a time- not 2 or 3 at the same time- almost like something is eating on them, and once that plant dies it moves on to the next. I've inspected them, and there are no critters to the naked eye. I've also treated with sevin dust.

Dig around in the soil and make sure there aren't any grubs to be found.  Something might be eating the roots.

Well I never got around to taking pictures, but my problem seems to have stopped. No lost plants in the last week or so. The plants have also doubled in size. And, I've been eating a salad every day for lunch 18 lettuce plants are too many for 2 people. I lost about 6 or 7 and that seems to be a good amount.
The broccoli is fantastic. Way better flavor than the store bought fresh. I am not a huge fan of broccoli but have been eating it raw in the salads it's so good. I'll plant more next year.

18 lettuce plants are too many?

These have tripled in size from the time of the pic.

I really can't eat all of it, and giving it away is not simple either.

I grew these from seeds and had no idea they would thrive so well this Spring.  The wallowed all winter and stayed at the 1-3" range for 3 months.  Now... they are going nuts.

I've got Romaine, Bibb, and Grand Rapids lettuce in the ground.  I got a late start with them this season, hopefully they'll do well before the heat kicks in.  I'll do a fall planting as well.  Next year I'll be better prepared.

OP,

When are you planting your lettuce?  I am new to the area and I think I might have gotten to late of a start in my garden to get much of a yield before the heat kicks.  Thanks for the help.

I planted lettuce, spinach, onions, kale and broccoli around Valentine's Day. The lettuce is doing great now. The broccoli is as well, but is about to poop out with the warm weather. Spinach and kale seem a little sluggish, I might have planted those too late. Next year I think I will plant mid- January. All of the above survived a couple of good frosts this year so planting earlier shouldn't be too much of an issue.

DId you have to cover them or anything special for the frost or just let them ride it out?

I just let them ride. From what I've read, everything I planted will do ok down to 25 degrees or so. I don't know why that is the magic number.
