I thought some of you might want to see this. I have been using the 5 stone Lansky sharpener for years now. It has always done a good job, but I have always felt a little bit limited by it.

After some digging around and looking I decided to make my own. I really really like this one...

This is a Wicked Edge sharpening system.

I just can't justify spending THAT much money. It is a VERY nice unit however....

I have about $3 and 3 hours in this so far.....

I am lucky enough to have some bigger tools to play with. Tonight I couldn't get any time on the mill at work, so I had to improvise with my smal lathe at home. Note: Need mill at home!

A little rummage through the scrap bin, an end mill, and a c-clamp. This worked well enough to let me mill out the slot. Its not perfect, but its WAY close enough to allow clearance for the clamp bolts and to get the heads of the bolts out of the way.

The paddles with stones and strops are next. I also need to find a base of some kind to mount it on.

Hope it sparks some ideas for some people.

I had seen the wicked sharpner before and I met the guys at shot show last year. They sharpened my buddies big folder and it was the sharpest thing I have seen.  Really nice system they have. And yes it does cost a penny or two.

I have one, and it is worth every penny!

I have changed the sharpened edge angle on a couple of my knives, and shaped and sharpened false edges on 3 others.  It does a very good job!

I would LOVE to have a 'real' one....I just couldn't justify the $250+ dollars. Plus they are on back order...

What grit stones do you guys use the most?
Do you have any of the strops or higher end water stones?

Since I bought to re-profile some blades and sharpen false edges, I have and use them all, including the leather strops. (no water stones though, yet!)

I've seen the Wicked Edge system used.  I'm impressed.  I'd like to have one but just can't swing that much money for just a sharpener.
