Sorry, not totally survival related, but this is usually where I roam around.  Does anyone know of a web site where you can "draw" in a route you hiked (trails, not roads) and get the mileage or your trip??

Have you looked at trails.com?  I went on a hike a few years ago and tried their site.  IIRC, there are maps on that site with common hiking trails and I was able to put in the route and it gave me mileage and elevation changes.  Do you have a GPS?  Some have that function with the maps and software that come with them.

Not really what you're looking for, but you can pretty much do that with Nat Geo Topo software.

Ok, I messed around in Google Earth and you can add "paths" and all sort of stuff, it will then tell you elevation, distance etc.... I must add though that the free version of Google Earth is not a very intuitive program.  I bet the pay version is much nicer, but anyway you can do what I was asking about.  Thanx, Ed
