Explain nodes to me please.

I have a repeater that uses a node out of Salt Lake City, I can hear it really well and listen to guys from all over the western half of the US. From my understanding I could use something on the computer to access the node and I can also type the node number into my radio key pad to access it. Is this correct? Not able to transmit just yet so I'm just listening.

Look up "IRLP". Internet Radio Link Protocol  if I remember the acronym. A node is basically one repeater in a system of several linked repeaters.

EchoLink is the most common.

An internet based system... repeaters have an available connection to the internet, and through that connection can then connect to other stations.  So an internet-connected user can access a repeater via the internet, or you can access a repeater with echolink available over the air, and direct a connection to another echolink-connected station or repeater (via DTMF commands typically).
