I have been out of fishing for about five maybe six years (or longer).  Getting all my stuff out of storage, and I have a ton of Stren fishing line.  Looks ok but it has to be 5-7 years old.  It wasn't in the sun, it was in a tackle box buried in the garage.  Is it good to go or will it be shot from "memory" being coiled so long?

there is no right answer as temperature and humidity have a big role in that. a pro would throw it out, but i would test it yourself first. just pull a few feet out and inspect it. check for brittleness and discoloration. if you have some memory in the line try out some Kevin VanDam line conditioner. no joke that stuff is awesome for memory. i have also heard about soaking old line in a tub of warm to hot water to lessen line memory(old farts trick).

Ya this stuff looks brand new. Doesn't seem to have any memory. Thanks for the tips.

Personally, I'd trash it and get some new line.  Line is not that expensive if you buy a bulk spool...I guess it depends on how many reels you have to spool also.

You have to ask yourself if:

Is the fish of a lifetime not worth replacing your line?

It might look ok, hell, might even be ok, but new line could turn a day of cussing and frustration into a day full of pics and high fives.

I'd replace it.

For the most part, I've been able to keep name brand mono. line for up to 5-8 years, on the original spool, if its kept in a more humid place, and out of the light.  In fact, I store it in a drawer in the bathroom.  I haven't had any break offs.  But..........

As a whole though, it's better to only buy what you're going to use in a couple of years, even if you store it properly.

The ironic thing is, that the dacron or some of the new "superlines", spectra, etc., seem to last less time, for some reason.

is new line really new line?? how long does that said "NEW LINE" sit on the shelf? About 8 years back I was at Kmart looking for a hi vis line in 20 lbs test all they had was 10 and 12 lbs big game hi vis green. I ask the sporting goods manager if they were expecting any big game hi vis green in 20 lbs he told me what was on the shelf was all they would have because normally they only order the white and lo vis green. I was in that same Kmart 2 weeks ago and that 10 and 12 big game hi vis green was still on the shelf in the same spot I would bet my arm and both legs that those are the same spools of line that were there 8 years ago.
